Australian left-handed batsman D’Arcy Short made his international debut earlier this year against New Zealand and has been fairly impressive thus far in national colours. The 28-year-old also plied his trade for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, but couldn’t make much of an impact. He is currently representing Western Australia in the domestic One Day tournament.
In his first match against South Australia, he could score only 17 runs and picked up the wicket of Alex Ross. However, he came into his own against Queensland and manifested why he is regarded as one of the most explosive batsmen doing the rounds in Australian cricket. The Northern Territory-born cricketer smashed 257 runs in 148 balls at an incredible strike rate of 173.64.
Short takes on the bowlers
Queensland, led by Chris Lynn, won the toss and elected to field first and the decision worked initially as Billy Stanlake got rid of Josh Inglis. However, Short took it upon himself and carted the bowlers to all corners of the Hurstville Oval. The swashbuckling batter brought up his century with a colossal whack into the stands. The awe-inspiring knock was laced with 15 boundaries and 23 sixes.
His second hundred came off a mere 47 balls. He is currently the third highest individual run scorer in men’s one day cricket after Ali Brown (268 for Surrey) and Rohit Sharma (264 for India). Short was eventually dismissed by Matthew Kuhnemann in the 46th over, but by then the damage was already done for Queensland.
The Warriors eventually racked up 387 in 47 overs despite Sam Heazlett’s 102-ball 107. The target eventually turned out to be a far cry for Lynn’s men as they folded for 271 runs in the 43rd over. Following the stupendous knock, Twitterati was awestruck and heaped praises on the top order batsman.
