The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have managed to defeat the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) comfortably to end their home campaign on a winning note. The Rajiv Gandhi international stadium was jam-packed to bid adieu to the Orange Army and the team didn’t disappoint the crowd. They first posted a mammoth total of 212 runs on the board and then the bowlers did enough to get over the line despite KL Rahul giving a little bit of scare in the end.

The chase began on the worst note for the visitors. Khaleel Ahmed got the better of Chris Gayle in the third over itself. Mayank Agarwal came out and played a few attractive strokes and then got out which has been his story this season. He scored 27 off just 18 balls while KL Rahul played the patient game at the other end. Though he was a bit slow early on, the opening batsman was setting himself up for a big finish.

But none of the batsmen could stay with him at the other end. All went for glory shots every ball and while some of them connected well, with the long boundaries in store, few went straight to the fielders. But Rahul was adamant and believed in himself. He started opening up in the last five overs when KXIP needed 90 runs. He had Prabhsimran Singh, the IPL debutant, at the other end and the youngster struggled a bit.

The pressure piled on Rahul and though he played some exquisite strokes in the book, Khaleel Ahmed sent him back in the penultimate over to end the contest. He played a delightful knock of 79 runs off 56 deliveries but his team fell short of the target of 45 runs.

Warner bids adieu with a special knock

David Warner was absolutely special with the bat for SRH after the KXIP skipper Ravi Ashwin opted to field first. Wriddhiman Saha opened the innings with him today and the decision worked wonders for the home side. The wicketkeeper-batsman smacked 28 runs in 13 balls even as Warner also plundered runs and SRH crossed the 70-run mark inside the powerplay overs.

Though Saha got out soon after the powerplay he had done his job perfectly. Manish Pandey then came and played second foil to the Australian. Both of them ran well between the wickets as well and targetted specific bowlers, especially Mujeeb Ur Rahman. The duo added 82 runs for the second wicket and despite losing them in the same over, SRH crossed 200 comfortably. Warner smashed 81 runs off just 56 balls with seven fours and a couple of superb hits out of the ground.

Kane Williamson and Mohammad Nabi played enterprising strokes in the death overs to propel the team’s score to 212 runs for the loss of six wickets. It proved enough in the end as KXIP didn’t have a partner to KL Rahul who fought a lone battle.
