With Marnus Labuschagne approaching his century Australia are at 221 for two at stumps on Day 1 of the second Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide. The batter ended the day by staying unbeaten on 95 runs with Steve Smith also on the pitch with 18 runs to his account. Though Australia lost an early wicket as Marcus Harris walked back to the hut with just three runs to his account, his opening partner David Warner made sure that the hosts take command of the game.
Warner provided the home side with a flying start and stayed resilient on the pitch before Ben Stokes’ short and wide delivery showed him the way back to the pavilion. The swashbuckling opener fell just five runs short of his century but stood firm on the field to build a 172-run partnership alongside Labuschagne. However, Warner had to miss his much-deserved century for the second consecutive time as he was dismissed at 94 in the first Test at the Gabba.
Australia dominates the proceedings on Day 1 of the second Test
The England bowlers found some help under the light when the ball seemed to have been moving but Jos Buttler dropped an absolute sitter against Labuschagne on 95, denying the visitors another wicket. After having won the toss, Australia had decided to bat first at the Adelaide Oval.
Stuart Broad who is playing his 150th Test though provided the visitors with an early breakthrough, England had to toil hard through the afternoon and evening as Australia’s second wicket pair exuded great character on the field. The visitor’s key pacers Broad and James Anderson had missed the first Test but they made their return to the setup for the second Test match.
The speedsters provided England with a disciplined start before Australia dominated the day. After having won the first Test comfortably, Australia entered the contest high on confidence which reflected in their performance on Day 1 of the second Test.
Australia has an impressive record in the day-night Tests. Whereas on the other hand, England has managed to win just one out of the four that they have played. It will be intriguing to see how the contest unfolds further.

David Warner out on 94 and 95 in this series. First time in 100 years an Australia batsman has failed to convert consecutive 90s into a century in the Ashes. Last Aussie to be dismissed in 90s two times in a row in the Ashes was Tommy Andrews in 1921. #Ashes
