Bangladesh’s hopes of going to the semis of the 2019 World Cup got another blow. At the Trent Bridge in Nottingham, Australia defeated the Tigers by 48 runs and moved to the top of the points table. Following a resounding batting show by the Men in Yellow, Bangladesh always found themselves behind the eight-ball. With the defeat, Mashrafe Mortaza and Co kept hanging in the middle of the table.

Warner gets a massive score

On an excellent batting strip, the Aussies didn’t have any hesitation to bat first. David Warner and Aaron Finch started the carnage with a stand of 121 runs. The duo gave Bangladesh nightmares and it was Soumya Sarkar, who gave his team the breakthrough, dismissing Finch, who got a 51-ball 53. Thereafter, Warner and Usman Khawaja kept piling agony for the Tigers as they added 192 for the second wicket.

Warner got to his ton off 110 balls and then stepped on the gas, looking good for a double-ton. But he got out to Sarkar after scoring 166 off 147 with 14 fours and five sixes. Khawaja wasn’t behind and he kept the Tigers’ bowling at bay, scoring 89. Glenn Maxwell flayed his bat for a 10-ball 31. From the 45th to the 48th over, Bangladesh picked up four wickets, but couldn’t stop the Aussies from posting 381.

Mushfiqur Rahim gets a valiant century

Soumya Sarkar hit a couple of boundaries to start Bangladesh’s run-chase, but a mix-up with Tamim Iqbal led to his run-out. However, Tamim also with Shakib Al Hasan steadied the ship and added 79 runs for the second wicket. Just when Shakib was starting to look ominous, Marcus Stoinis got him out on a run-a-ball 41. Tamim didn’t stop and accomplished his maiden fifty in this World Cup off 65 deliveries.

In the 25th over, he inside-edged one off Mitchell Starc after scoring 62. Liton Das perished for 20, trapped by Adam Zampa. Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim tried hard and the duo scored 127 for the fifth wicket, but by then the rate had gone over 17. Mahmudullah fought hard and got 69. Mushfiqur notched a classical century off 95 balls and Bangladesh ended on 333 for eight in their 50 overs.
