Prior to their match against Northern Superchargers, London Spirit were in quite a bit of strife. The Heather Knight-led side had lost three games in a row and needed to make a comeback. On Tuesday, August 3, they beat the Superchargers by seven wickets and moved up to sixth in the points table. Deandra Dottin became the Player of the Match for her sparkling half-century in the close run-chase.
Jemimah Rodrigues shines again
After electing to bat first, the Superchargers lost Lauren Winfield to Sophie Munro. However, Jemimah Rodrigues and Laura Wolvaardt stitched together a 53-run stand for the second wicket to set the tone for their team. Munro separated the duo, getting rid of Wolvaardt, who was batting on 22 with three fours. Thereafter, Alice Davidson Richards gave Rodrigues the apt support.
Richards scored 22 off 21 before Deepti Sharma got rid of her. In the meantime, Rodrigues went on to score yet another fifty in the tournament. The youngster notched 57 off 44 with seven fours and got out to Freya Davies in the 89th ball of the innings. Laura Kimmince’s six-ball 15 propelled the Superchargers to 126. For the Spirit, Munro was the standout bowler with two scalps to his name.
Dottin delivers under extreme pressure
The Spirit didn’t make the greatest of starts as Naomi Dattani perished to Elizabeth Russell. Tammy Beaumont and Knight restored sanity with a 38-run stand for the second wicket. Once Knight got out to Linsey Smith for 16, the onus was then on Beaumont and Dottin to carry on. The duo put on a priceless partnership of 56 runs off 46 balls and didn’t allow the required rate to jump up.
But Richards broke the stand as she dismissed Beaumont, who made 42 off 36 with four fours. After she got out, Dottin took the onus upon herself to see her team through. The game went down to the last set of five balls and the West Indies batter held her nerves. She smashed two fours in a row, got to her half-century off 34 balls and took the Spirit over the finishing line with two balls to spare.
Here’s how the netizens reacted to London Spirit’s win at the Lord’s:
