Twitter Reactions: Debutant Jennings scores century as England take Day 1 honours
Debutant Keaton Jennings scored a magnificent century as England finished Day 1 of the 4th Test in Mumbai with their nose slightly ahead of their Indian counterparts. England went off to a solid start after winning the toss as openers Cook and Jennings stitched together a 99-run partnership for the opening wicket.
Jennings was brilliant on his Test debut as he played the spin-trio with utmost comfort and disdain. It was simply astonishing to see a debutant English batsman playing so well against a quality spin attack especially on a track which had enough for the spinners. India got their 1st wicket by the end of the 1st session and it was Ravindra Jadeja who provided his captain with the much-needed breakthrough. Parthiv Patel was quick behind the stumps as he initiated a fine stumping.
Joe Root who came in at the fall of Cook’s wicket was troubled early in his innings by the spinners and eventually fell prey to Ravichandran Ashwin after scoring 21. Moeen Ali joined the debutant at the score of 136/2 and stitched together a valuable 94-run partnership with the centurion. Ali was dismissed immediately after reaching his fifty and it was again Ashwin who broke the partnership.
Jennings whose century was decorated with 13 fours fell in the same over as Ashwin brought the hosts back into the game with his double strike in double quick time. He also dismissed the in-form batsman Jonny Bairstow during the later stages of the day to bag his 4th wicket in the innings. Jos Buttler who made his Test comeback in the previous match at Mohali was troubled by the Indian spin trio early on in his innings but somehow managed to bat out the day safely.
Despite the Mumbai pitch offering enough assistance to the spinners, the visitors batted on a positive note and it was a commendable job by the English side to finish the day comfortably placed at 288/5. The Indian bowlers finished their quota of 90 overs within the stipulated time and by the end of the day, they had bowled 94 overs.
For India, Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers and finished with figures 4/75 and Jadeja chipped in with Cook’s wicket. Jayant Yadav was unlucky despite bowling pretty well and finished wicketless.
It was an eventful day of Test cricket with both teams being reasonably pleased with their performances. Twitteratti was quite active throughout the day’s play and there were certain tweets which described the proceedings in the best possible way.
