The Pakistan vs West Indies 1st Test was all about the batsmen for the first three and a half days as the Pakistanis posted 579 runs on the board powered by Azhar Ali’s a super triple century. West Indies in their reply showed some resolve but was not enough to overhaul the follow-on total. Misbah-ul-Haq decided against imposing follow-on and the Pakistani openers walked out to bat again as they looked to get some quick runs. But a different story panned out as West Indian leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo picked an 8-wicket haul and wrapped their inning up on just 123.
Pakistan having lost a couple of early wickets in came back better in the post tea session with Sami Aslam and Babar Azam getting together a 57-run partnership but once the duo departed things fell apart for the hosts and completely lost the track to almost give it away.
It was a dual effect of some poor shot selection by the Pakistani batsmen and good use of the turning track by the leg-spinner. Bishoo first had Asad Shafiq leg before then got Aslam caught by Jermaine Blackwood for 44. Babar who is playing his first Test having already scored a fifty in the first inning couldn’t do much in the second knock and was cleaned up for 21. He struck once again to remove Pakistan skipper Misbah for 15.
At that stage, Pakistan were 5 down for 112 and looked in trouble. But it was deeper than it appeared and they drowned thereafter. Sarfaraz Ahmed was stumped by Shane Dowrich on the individual score of 15. Mohammad Nawaz was bowled for a third-ball duck, Wahab Riaz was caught for 2 and he once again hit the timber as the last man Mohammad Amir was dismissed for 1.
Though Bishoo gets full marks for his bowling effort West Indies still has a lot to do to make it count as they need 346 runs to win the Test.
Here is how Twitter reacted to Devendra Bishoo’s vicious spell:
Best bowling in a Test in the UAE (Bishoo) and highest individual score in a Test in the UAE (Azhar) both in the same game #PakvWI

There is something about leg spinners. Shane Warne, Amit Mishra, Yasir Shah & Devendra Bishoo. So beautiful to watch when in flow.

I have seen our batsmen handing their asses to Bishoo before but this is on a whole other level.

Bishoo's 8-49 is best bowling figures in Tests by a leg-spinner since Kumble's 10-for in Delhi in 1999. 5th best overall. #PakvWI #leggies
