Sri Lanka, well and truly, are in a commanding position in their second Test against the West Indies at the Galle International Stadium. At the close of Day four, the Lankans are leading by a significant margin of 279 runs with two wickets left in the shed in their second innings. As far as the Caribbean team is concerned, they need to pull a rabbit out of the hat if they want to save the Test.
De Silva shepherds Sri Lanka
Lanka didn’t make the greatest of starts to the day as Veerasammy Permaul accounted for Charith Asalanka’s wicket. However, Pathum Nissanka and Dhananjaya de Silva put on 78 runs for the fourth wicket. Nissanka was into his 20s when the day started and he reached his half-century off 122 balls. He went on to score 66 runs with four fours before Roston Chase trapped him plumb in front.
Thereafter, the Lankans lost wickets at pretty regular intervals and were reduced to 221 for eight in 84.3 overs. De Silva, at the other end, looked secured and got to his fifty off 97 balls. The home team went into the final session with their score at 238 for eight in 90 overs. With the lead below 200, the hosts were in a precarious position as West Indies were set to turn the screws on them big time.
Embuldeniya joins hands with de Silva
In the final session, the Lankans made a stupendous comeback. Not only did they score 90 runs from 29 runs, but also made sure that the Caribbean team wasn’t allowed to get a foothold back into the contest. De Silva reached his century off 189 balls after which he stepped on the gas to a large extent. The right-hander played his role and also showed faith in his partner, Lasith Embuldeniya.
Embuldeniya showed nerves of steel and stayed not out on 25 off 110 balls with one six. De Silva, in the meantime, stayed unbeaten on 153 runs off 259 balls with 11 fours and two sixes. The duo has stitched together a partnership of 107 runs for the ninth wicket. Permaul has been the pick of the bowlers for the visitors with three wickets. Chase also got two wickets to his name.
Here’s how the netizens reacted to the day’s play

This is once in lifetime sort of innings from D de Siliva. SL had a lead of 172 when the 8th wicket fell and it looked like the target they might set would be around 190 but then situation changed drastically and now a 100 wicket partnership for night wicket. #SLvsWI

Brathwaite last delivery to Embuldeniya at 57kmph / 35 mph. That's one of the slowest deliveries that I have witnessed in Intl. cricket. #SlvsWI #testcricket #Galle
