The Kings XI Punjab faced the Rising Pune Supergiants in the inconsequential match at Vizag. The last time these two sides had met, it was a fierce Glenn Maxwell that had won the game for Punjab at Mohali.

After winning the toss, Kings XI skipper Murali Vijay surprised everyone with his remarks saying that a score of 140 would be a par total on the wicket. He elected to bat first. RPS skipper MS Dhoni never gives a clue away and said he would have bowled first had he won the toss. KXIP got off to a flying start with both Hashim Amla and Murali Vijay playing their shots at ease.

Skipper Vijay soon brought up his half century as wickets kept tumbling from the other end. He led from the front yet again en route his 5th half century of the season. He was ably supported by Gurkeerat Singh Mann, who for the first time in this season, showed positive intent with the bat and scored a brisk 30-ball 51. For the RPS, it was Ravichandran Ashwin who bagged 4/34. Kings XI put on 172/7 in their 20 overs which looked a really good total at the halfway mark.

Pune openers played uncharacteristic slow knocks with Ajinkya Rahane getting out after 19 and Usman Khawaja giving it up after scoring 30. The wickets fell in a cluster and Supergiants were bowing out of the competition before Thisara Perera and MS Dhoni lit up the stadium with cracking shots. Perera perished in the penultimate over. Only 6 came off the penultimate over that left Dhoni needing 23 to win being on strike.

The best was yet to come as he smashed 23 off the last over by Axar Patel and won it handsomely for the Rising Pune Supergiants. Dhoni was phenomenal throughout the inning and almost single-handedly won the match for his side. He remained unbeaten on 64 off 32 balls with 4 fours and 5 sixes.
