After two days of sheer dominance from Bangladesh, the honours were shared on the third day of the opening Test. Sri Lanka didn’t throw in the towel, but the visitors ended the third day with their noses ahead. At the close of play on Day 3, the Lankans are trailing by a massive 312 runs with seven wickets left in their first innings. They still need 112 runs to avoid the follow-on in Pallekele.
Mushfiqur surpasses Tamim
Both the overnight batters, Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim, made sure that they carried on the good work by Tamim Iqbal, Najmul Hossain Shanto and skipper Mominul Haque. The duo put on a partnership of 87 runs for the fifth wicket to take their team past the 500-run mark.
Even as Rahim was a tad circumspect, Liton went for his shots and notched his half-century off a mere 66 balls. Prior to that Mushfiqur accomplished his fifty off 120 balls. The Bogra-born also surpassed Tamim to become Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer in Test cricket.
Vishwa Fernando, who picked four wickets, got rid of Liton after the latter’s 67-ball 50. Mushfiqur stayed unbeaten on 68 and the Tigers declared their innings at 541 for seven. Suranga Lakmal, Lahiru Kumara and Dhananjaya de Silva got a wicket each for the hosts.
Dimuth Karunaratne holds fort
Replying to the Tigers’ batting show, the Lankans matched fire with fire. Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne put on 114 runs for the opening wicket. Mehidy Hasan Miraz broke the stand, by removing the latter, who scored 58 off 125 balls with the help of eight fours.
Oshada Fernando looked determined, but he perished to Taskin Ahmed after scoring 20 runs off 43 balls with four boundaries. Taskin was fiery in his first spell, bowling some bouncers and also showed a lot of accuracy. He was rewarded with the wicket of Fernando.
Thereafter, Taijul Islam joined the party, getting rid of Angelo Mathews, who got a brisk 32-ball 25. Karunaratne looked unshakable as he stayed unbeaten on a 211-ball 85 with eight fours. Along with him is Dhananjaya de Silva, who’s batting on 26 runs with four fours.

Bangladesh played three fast bowlers in a Test after an eternity. But it was Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam with 44 out of the 73 overs bowled. Taskin Ahmed, clearly the standout speedster with pace, venom and accuracy. #SLvsBAN #SLvBAN #Bangladesh
