Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), led by Dinesh Karthik, and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are currently playing their respective first match in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Last year in the 2018 edition, the Knights lost both their games against the Sunrisers at the renowned venue and the hosts would have been keen to make amends.
It was the Knights who decided to field first after winning the toss. The team suffered three injury exclusions in the form of Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Shivam Mavi and Anrich Nortje, but managed to rope in Sandeep Warrier and KC Cariappa. However, the game didn’t start on a happy note for the home team courtesy of a decent start from David Warner and Englishman Jonny Bairstow.
A blunder from Dinesh Karthik
The experienced campaigner was earlier criticised after he strained in the early part of the erstwhile edition. Even this year, he got off to a jittery beginning. The Tamil Nadu-born wicketkeeper-batsman wasted a Decision Review System Review (DRS) very early in the SRH innings. The incident took place in the fifth delivery of the second over by leg-spin bowler Piyush Chawla.
Karthik churned out a good-length ball and he also bowled a googly, which the batsman- Warner- failed to read. The left-hander went on the backfoot and tried to flick the leather away, but he missed the cherry completely and got struck on the pads. Chawla and Karthik appealed with all their might. Nevertheless, the on-field umpire remained unmoved and gave it not out.
Thereafter, Karthik and Piyush resorted to taking the DRS. To his utter disappointment, replays showed that the umpire’s decision was correct. The ball pitched outside the leg-stump, thought it would’ve crashed on to the stumps. Subsequently, KKR received their review. In the meantime, Twitter lashed out at Karthik for not being careful enough while using the DRS.
Here is how Twitter reacted
Thank god we have Dhoni behind the stumps in Indian team and not Karthik or Pant. Both keep finding ways to prove them worse than the other when it comes to take DRS. #IPL

DRS means 'Dhoni review system'
Not 'Dinesh review system'

@msdhoni is keeping in the world cup, so @DineshKarthik should not keep for @KKRiders ! Because they have robin to keep, here @DineshKarthik should practice in the field without the gloves!#WorldCup2019 #IPL12 #IPL19 #askthestar @imVkohli @RaviShastriOfc

Pathetic reviews taken by Indian Players continue. Dinesh Karthik the culprit on this occasion!
It’s like they don’t know fundamental rules of LBW!
Everything that hits the pads is out! #IPL2019— RG (@2_rg) March 24, 2019
Shocking DRS call by Dinesh Karthik.
That's why Dhoni is such a great wicket keeper.

"How not to take a review" featuring Piyush Chawla and Dinesh Karthik #KKRvSRH

This is the difference between a #Dhoni Review System and a #DineshKarthik Review System! Both are #DRS, but miles apart from each other when it comes to the accuracy and logic! #KKRvSRH #IPL #IPL2019
