Twitter Reactions: Disciplined Renegades trump Stars by six wickets in the Melbourne derby
Renegades went to the top of the table with their fourth win in five matches.
Melbourne Renegades have defeated Melbourne Stars in the derby by six wickets at the iconic MCG in front of a massive 48,000 crowd. Stars slumped to their fourth successive defeat as their opponents climbed to the top of the ladder in the points table with a superior net run-rate. It was the disciplined effort by the winning side as they didn’t give an inch to their rivals. However, Twitterati, as usual, was aware of the happenings during the game and kept themselves busy throughout the proceedings.
Renegades won the toss and invited Stars to bat first as Luke Wright’s misery in the middle was ended by Dwayne Bravo. Then Ben Dunk and Kevin Pietersen took the mantle of the side in their hands and stitched a good partnership in the middle. They added 71 runs in just over eight overs as the Stars looked set to post a big total. The pair looked solid while they were together as Pietersen was dismissed on 40 off 30 deliveries. The wicket sucked the momentum out of their innings as they struggled to pick up the pace.
Soon Dunk was sent back after scoring 47 even as Glenn Maxwell hit some lusty blows in the end. But the death bowling of Renegades was excellent as they didn’t allow them to go past 157 after their 20 overs. Mohammad Nabi and Jack Wildermuth were the pick of the bowlers as they conceded just around seven runs per over and fluffed a batter each of the Stars.
Comfortable chase for Renegades
Aaron Finch launched an assault right away in the chase and took the advantage of the powerplay overs. He scored 43 off just 22 deliveries before being castled by the leggie Adam Zampa. Cameron White, at number 3, played a careful knock as Nabi played his shots with freedom. He connected a few as the required run-rate came down quickly. He took a particular liking to Michael Beer and smashed him for a couple of sixes. Soon he completed his half-century but couldn’t finish the game for his team.
Despite late wickets, Renegades comfortably chased down the total with six wickets in hand with 13 balls to spare. The victory rocketed them to the top as they would love to stay at the numero uno position with consistent performances. Twitter trolled Stars as they continued losing but hailed Renegades, especially Nabi, for putting up a brilliant show.
