Twitter Reactions: Dominant Australia crush Proteas, take 1-0 lead
Australia won the first Test by 118 runs.
Team Australia registered a comfortable 118 run win in the first Test against the hosts South Africa. The convincing win has now given them a crucial 1-0 lead in the four match Test series. Coming to the final day’s play, only the formalities were left for the visitors. They had sent back 9 Proteas players back to the pavilion on the penultimate day of the Test.
On the final day, Quinton de Kock and Morne Morkel arrived at the crease. The match could have wrapped up on the previous day itself had the Aussie quicks bowled in the death overs of the day. However, the dipping light forced the umpires to declare the light to be too feeble for the batsmen to play fast bowlers.
Australia tried their hands with spinners, including skipper Steve Smith bowling a couple of overs. But both de Kock and Morne Morkel hung in on the day. On the final day, the visitors did not take long to wrap up the innings. Josh Hazlewood trapped Quinton de Kock lbw on 83. De Kock did review, but it was only as an act of formality.
With the wicket, the Australians registered a comfortable 118 run win and now have a crucial 1-0 lead in the series. Earlier in the game, Australia had posted 351 runs on the board riding on a fine 96 from Mitch Marsh. In response, Mitch Starc’s five-for bundled out South Africa for just 162 despite AB de Villiers’ unbeaten fifty.
The visitors gained a handy 189 run first innings lead. Hence, despite being bowled out for just 227 in the second innings, they still were ahead in the game. The hosts were set a target of 417 for the win. South Africa lost their first four wickets with less than 50 runs on the board. Aiden Markram’s magnificent 143 kept South Africa in the hunt for a brief while but his dismissal saw yet another batting collapse.
