West Indies sealed the deal in the first session of the fourth day of the first Test match against Bangladesh at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. They dominated the visitors from the very first day and managed to wind up the game early. West Indies’ strategies worked out perfectly well as they required just 84 runs in the final innings to clinch the match.
Speaking of how the game panned out, the toss went in West Indies’ favor as they put the visitors to bat first. No one except skipper Shakib al Hasan (51 off 67) could bat well, and the team witnessed six players getting out for a duck. Taking advantage of the conditions, the hosts dished out the Tigers for mere 103 runs as Bangladesh’s batting lineup came crashing down.
West Indies were off to a great start in their innings and managed to score 265 runs, taking a handy lead of 162 runs. The Shakib al Hasan-led team planned to score big in the second innings in order to balance out their poor performance from the first, but no one except opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy (42 off 153), Shakib, and wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan played well.
West Indies did not let the visitors take a lead and bundled them out for 245 runs. Bangladesh would not have crossed the 200-run mark had Shakib (63 off 99) and Nurul (64 off 147) not put up that partnership. Day three ended on a low note for the visitors, again. Kemar Roach made a remarkable comeback and bagged a five-wicket haul.
Khaled Ahmed worked his magic in the second over when he got the wickets of top-order batters Kraigg Brathwaite (1 off 2) and Raymon Reifer (2 off 4). He struck again in the fourth over to clean up Nkrumah Bonner (0) and the hosts were dropped to 9/3 at the end of four overs as they were chasing 84 runs for the win. John Campbell and Jermaine Blackwood sailed through the third day to end at 49/3 in 15 overs.
John Campbell’s powerful half-century leads West Indies to a win
Coming to the fourth day, the hosts required just 35 runs to win the first Test. The duo of Campbell and Blackwood (26 off 53) continued to bat in the first session. The former hit a handful of boundaries as soon as he entered and finished off the game in style with a six, thereby remaining unbeaten at 58*(67) to get his third Test fifty, as West Indies grabbed the victory. They defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets and took a lead of 1-0 in the two-match Test series.
While the hosts will plan to continue their momentum in the next game and win the series by 2-0, the visitors will try to settle the scores after their terrible loss and balance out the series by 1-1.
Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitter reacted to West Indies’ triumph:
