India might have been humiliated by arch-rivals Pakistan just two Sundays ago when the Men in Blue suffered a heavy 180-run defeat at The Oval; Indian Women took some sort of revenge in their group game against Pakistan at Derby. By virtue of their 95-run win, Mithali Raj’s team has extended their unbeaten run in the ICC Women’s World Cup to 3 games.

Chances of an Indian win looked slim during the innings break after the Pakistani bowlers made life uneasy for the batswomen. Chasing just 170 to win, Ekta Bisht rose to the occasion by running through the Pakistani top order. She bowled in the right areas and was very disciplined, striking in her very first over. Her first spell figures read 4-1-4-3 before she was taken off for a while by skipper Mithali. She came back to torment Pakistan further and picked two more wickets to register her second 5-wicket haul in ODI cricket, both against Pakistan.

Jhulan Goswami (1/12) opened the bowling alongside Bisht and was very tight in her lengths. She sent No. 3 batter Javeria Khan back to the pavilion in the fifth over to peg Pakistan back early in the chase. Mansi Joshi (2/9), playing in her only sixth game, struck twice to ensure that there was no fightback from Pakistan. It was a brilliant effort by the Indian bowlers to compensate an off day for their batters.

Opener Punam Raut gave India a solid start despite losing her partner Smriti Mandhana (2) early. She stitched a valuable 67-run partnership with Deepti Sharma (28) to lay a decent foundation for a big score. Post her dismissal, though, there was a mini-collapse as India lost 5 wickets for 37 runs and were reeling at 111 for 6 after 37 overs. India posted a defendable total thanks to a late cameo by Sushma Verma, who scored a 35-ball 33. 169 was not the ideal total India were hoping for but they had something to bowl at.

Bowling with the new ball, Bisht kept it simple by bowling wicket to wicket. Pakistan batswomen made the mistake of playing for the non-existent turn as three of their batters were trapped leg before wicket. The left-arm spinner was awarded the Player of the Match for her 5/18.
