Australia produced a complete performance with both bat and ball in their World Cup encounter against the West Indies. The Meg Lanning-led side crushed their opponents by seven wickets to continue their unbeaten run in the 2022 World Cup.
Batting first, the West Indies side was bowled out for a paltry total of 131. Apart from skipper Stafanie Taylor, who scored a fighting half-century, all the other batters failed to step up for the ‘Women in Maroon’.
There were three batters who were dismissed without even opening their account as well. For the Aussies, Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner scalped three wickets each, while Jess Jonassen chipped in with a couple of wickets as the West Indies batters were rendered clueless by the Kangaroos.
Rachael Haynes’s 83* powers Australia past the target set by West Indies
For Australia, Rachael Haynes produced a stellar performance with the bat. The opening batter plundered a match-winning 83* off 95 deliveries to help Australia make light work of the target. Haynes struck nine fours in her enterprising innings, as the Aussies cantered past the target with 19.4 overs to spare to post a comprehensive win.
Even though Australia lost three quick wickets with their scorecard reading 58, Beth Mooney joined hands with Haynes to make sure that the Aussies did not face any more hiccups. The duo of Haynes and Mooney stitched together a match-winning stand of 74 runs for the fourth wicket to get the job done for the Kangaroos. Mooney, on her part, scored a handy 42-ball 28*. For the West Indies, Hayley Matthews, Shamilia Connell, and Chinelle Henry scalped one wicket each with the ball in hand.
With this victory, the Aussies have solidified their position at the top of the points table, while the West Indies are occupying the 5th spot in the table after emerging triumphant in two out of their four games.
