Twitter Reactions: England breeze past the hosts in a rain-marred encounter
The English skipper Eoin Morgan registered back to back fifties and continued his impressive run to give his team a 2-0 lead.
A rampant England once again proved why they’re rated as one of the best limited-overs sides in the world as they chipped in with yet another dominating performance against Sri Lanka. The game was reduced to a 21-overs per side affair after rain gods’ intervened, but that didn’t reduce the intensity levels.
Batting first, the hosts got off to a fiery start with Niroshan Dickwella and Sadeera Samarawickrama adding 57 runs for the first wicket. Dickwella was ruthless in the first few overs and piled up a quickfire 36 before getting dismissed in the 6th over. Almost immediately, Kusal Mendis’ stumps were cleaned up by Adil Rashid.
Dinesh Chandimal and Samarawickrama found it difficult to get the scoreboard moving and the run rate dipped. Tom Curran then chipped in with a brilliant spell in the middle overs to break the Lankan hearts. Dasun Shanaka nevertheless chipped in with a cameo and helped his side post 150 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their quota of overs.
Morgan’s fifty gets the visitors over the line
Jason Roy’s blitzkrieg helped the Englishmen get off to a breathtaking start chasing a moderate total. The batting conditions were too good despite all the rain which poured down a little while ago. Amilo Aponso started off in with a couple of wickets and tried to pull things back a bit for the Lankans, but that didn’t change anything.
Roy got out soon and there was some trouble for the English could feel just for a little while. But skipper Eoin Morgan and all-rounder Ben Stokes chipped in with a brilliant partnership which helped the visitors get into a decent position.
The English skipper registered back to back fifties and continued his impressive run. Morgan scored 58 off 49 balls whilst Stokes remained unbeaten on 35 off 24 balls. The duo added 73 runs for the 4th wicket and completed the run chase in just 18.3 overs.
