Twitter Reactions: England claims the spoils on the first day

England seemingly defied all odds on the day as they went on to amass a decent total at the conclusion of the first day’s play of the first Test at Rajkot. Of the players who impressed, it was Joe Root and Moeen Ali with the former managing a ton as he did.
Moeen Ali on the other hand then went on to impress as he made his way ever so close to a well-deserved Test match hundred. Of course, no one comes closer to a Test match ton than 99 at the close of the first day’s play.
As for the Indians, they had continual issues with the new ball on the first day. What hampered them was the fact that the wicket was a lush green one and something that was indeed well suited for batting. However, in spite of all this, the Indians spinners Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were marginally successful in the first session when they claimed three wickets.
However, things began to go downhill from there on as they simply could not dismiss Joe Root and Moeen Ali. Umesh Yadav broke the partnership with some relentless bowling while he made a complete fool of himself whilst doing the same when he attempted to look good while completing the catch.

At the close of play, England were on 311/4, something no side has amanged to do in recent times with Moeen Ali on 99. Perhaps it was good riddance from Ben Stokes as he waited out the last delivery from the bowling of Amit Mishra.
311/4 , England should be mighty pleased.
Not many touring sides have such a good day on their first day on a tour to India.#IndvsEng— Mohammad Kaif (@MohammadKaif) November 9, 2016

Not a single boundary by stepping out…only one by sweeping (full toss). That's Joe Root vs Spin today. #INDvENG
