When was the last time you see such a one-sided five-match Test series? Australia literally demolished England and retained the Ashesurn with a 4-0 triumph. It was sheer dominance from the Pat Cummins-led side as England hardly had any pleasant moment throughout the series. Meanwhile, they did look good in the fifth and final Test in Hobart and even put the Aussies on the back seat at some extent.
However, their batters failed yet again and suffered a 146-run defeat in the final Test. England certainly had a chance to end the dismal series on a high note as they needed 271 runs to win the Day-Night clash in Hobart. At 60/0, the Three Lions looked even on track. However, the rest of the batting line-up failed to exhibit any sort of resistance whatsoever.
Mark Wood’s six-fer gave England a glimmer of hope
As a result, Joe Root’s men got bundled out for 124 and lost another Test against their arch rivals. Speaking of how Day 3 of the contest panned out, Australia started the day at 37/3, having a lead of 152 runs. As the track kept deteriorating with time, Australian batters endured a hard time in the first session. Mark Wood was the wrecker-in-chief for England as he spitted venom with the red cherry.
He took a six-wicket haul as Australia were skittled out for a paltry 155 in their second innings. However, the hosts had a 115-run lead in the first innings. Hence, the visitors were asked to chase down 271 for victory. While England’s win was never on the cards, they did manage to make an impressive start to the chase.
Openers Rory Burns and Zak Crawley added 68 runs for the first wicket as the contest seemed spiced up. However, Pat Cummins, Scott Boland and Cameron Green took three wickets apiece to take their side over the line. Skipper Cummins seemed delighted with the series win.
“Really is (stuff of dreams). Pretty crazy. To be at the end of a 5-match series with so many positives and 4-0, yeah really pumped. I am really happy as a captain, not sure if he (smiles, on not having to bowl Lyon in the entire game). We have had some 15 players used in this series, some tough calls. Certainly feels like we are on to something big,” said Cummins after the game.
Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitterati reacted to Australia’s triumph:

The last glimpse of James Anderson on Australian soil as a Test cricketer, walking away with a bunch of gloves, after having helped clear up the England team dug-out. At least his final act was to deny the Aussies a whitewash #Ashes pic.twitter.com/IcmBRiJbYc
