Twitter Reactions: England fall in a deeper trench after Marsh brothers rack up tons
Australia are only 6 wickets away from yet another thumping win.
The penultimate day of the final Ashes Test of 2017-18 season belonged to the Australian side. Well, this was not something new this season. The hosts have thoroughly dominated the visiting England side and the story continued to unfold on the expected lines. The English side are now staring right back at another embarrassing defeat in the series. The final scoreline of 4-0 is pretty much on the cards in the favor of the hosts.
As the day unfolded, the Australian batsmen continued to bat well to follow up the good work done by their top order. Earlier in the game, Usman Khawaja had scored a magnificent 171 and Steve Smith had piled up 83 runs to put Australia in a leading position. The England bowlers, as has been the case of the season, looked lackluster in their efforts.
On the fourth day, the Marsh brothers – Shaun Marsh and Mitchell Marsh – kicked off the action on the same note on which they had left on the previous day. While Shaun went on to score another masterly 150, Mitchell Marsh racked up a cracking ton. The Marsh brothers celebrated the occasion in style and the fans went gaga about their celebration. They had a mid-pitch hug to celebrate their efforts.
Shaun ended up scoring 156 and Mitch had 101 to his name as Australian total went past the 500-run mark. It was only a matter of time that the Aussies added some more runs to their account. Handy cameos from Tim Paine and Pat Cummins saw Australia finish with 649/7 when their skipper Steve Smith declared the innings. With England trailing by 303 runs when they started their second innings, everyone knew where this match was heading.
However, there was still some glimmer of hope for the English fans. All of that also seemed to be crashing into a deeper trench as England finished the day on 93/4. They still trail by 210 runs. Their solitary hope now resides in their skipper Joe Root, who is unbeaten on 42.
Here is how the Twitterati reacted to the day’s action:
