The Champions Trophy kicked off at London as the hosts took on Bangladesh in the first game. Luckily with no rain interruptions, it was a run fest at The Kia Oval with both teams scoring above 300 and the home team beginning their campaign with a huge victory. Joe Root scored a match-defining century as he steered England to a brilliant run chase. In what was his tenth century, Root scored 11 boundaries and a six as he also went on to win the game for England by 8 wickets.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh who were put into bat first after losing the toss did well as a batting unit. Tamim Iqbal maintained his consistency with the bat as he smashed a spectacular hundred. With 12 boundaries and 3 sixes, he didn’t allow the English bowlers to breathe easy.

Mushfiqur Rahim also batted particularly well for his 79 (72). Sabbir Rahman provided the finishing touches with a quickfire cameo in the end as Bangladesh managed to cross the 300-run mark. It clearly wasn’t a day for the bowlers who were taken to the cleaners. Only Liam Plunkett shone with splendid figures of 4/59.

The English team didn’t have a great start with Jason Roy back to the pavilion in the third over. However, some sensational batting by Joe Root set the tone for the home team. First alongside Alex Hales who missed out on a well-deserved century and later Eoin Morgan who registered a fascinating knock. Their efforts made sure England cruised to the target with 16 balls to spare.

While England made a mockery of the chase, Bangladesh showed that they couldn’t be taken lightly in this format. Joe Root for his astounding century was rewarded the man of the match.
