The third Ashes Test kicked off at the WACA in Perth. While Australia had an upper edge during the first half of the day, England managed to pull back things together by the end of the day. Riding on a stupendous century by Dawid Malan, the visitors were comfortably placed with at stumps on Day One.
Earlier in the day, it was skipper Joe Root who won the toss as England elected to bat first. They had an unchanged XI from the previous game at the Adelaide Oval. As for Australia, all rounder Mitchell Marsh was brought in place of Peter Handscomb.
Alastair Cook who has been under fire for his poor form continued to disappoint. He was trapped in front of the stumps by Mitchell Starc. Opener Mark Stoneman and James Vince combined for a 63 run partnership for the second wicket. However, Vince couldn’t prolong his stay at the crease as he was dismissed for 25.
Mark Stoneman batted sensibly well as he registered his third fifty in Test cricket. Skipper Joe Root looked in good touch before getting out edging one to Tim Paine. Mitchell Starc followed it up with another as Stoneman got out. England were reduced to 131/4.
For a moment, it seemed that England would find it difficult to even cross 250. The Australian pace attack was fired up as they consistently hurled speedsters. However, what followed was a magnificent partnership between Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow. Both batsmen combined for an unbeaten run partnership for the fifth wicket.
Dawid Malan went on to score an outstanding hundred. In an innings of from balls, he hit 14 boundaries and a six. On the other hand, Jonny Bairstow too looked solid with a splendid Both showed great character after England were put on backfoot by the Australian pacers early.
Twitter was all riled up regarding the action that took place on Day One of the third Ashes test. While Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow were hailed for a brilliant partnership, Mitchell Marsh and Alastair Cook were trolled. Here we present to you some of the best tweets during Day 1 of the third Test.

Last England batsman to score his maiden Test century in #Ashes was Ben Stokes, also at the WACA, in 2013-14. Dawid Malan does it this time.

Wonderful partnership this by Bairstow & Malan, fantastic to watch these two fight hard and play with freedom. It’s been a great days cricket and nice to see some pace and bounce again at the WACA too. England need to make a 400+ score then it’s game on !
