Falling two runs short of getting a magical score of 500 runs, England registered the highest ever ODI total in the history of cricket as they notched up 498 runs in their 50-over quota to script their name in the history books. With this feat, which was recorded in the first ODI against Netherlands, the visitors took have taken their game to a whole another level and Twitter can’t keep calm.

The first innings started off with the Netherlands winning the toss and electing to bowl first. The hosts got an early breakthrough in the form of Jason Roy, who could manage just one run. His fellow opener Philip Salt was joined by Dawid Malan at the top order and what happened next was out of the hosts’ control.

The duo added 222 runs for the second wicket before Salt was dismissed after slamming a brilliant ton. In the 93 deliveries that he faced, he hit 14 fours plus three sixes and ended up with 122 runs in his kitty. The duo wreaked havoc on the field and gave the hosts a tough time. The Netherlands bowlers failed to dismiss the two for a very long time and were left hopeless of a win.

Then came Jos Buttler and took the game by a storm. Buttler and Malan added 184 runs for the third wicket to push Netherlands on the back foot even further. The Englishmen were unstoppable as they made their bats talk. It was Malan who had to find his way back to the pavilion after being dismissed by skipper Pieter Seelaar. Malan’s innings witnessed 125 runs coming off his bat which included nine fours and three sixes in the 109 deliveries that he played.

Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone’s unbeaten knocks take England over the line

Netherlands took a sigh of relief when Seelaar bagged two wickets in a row, as Malan’s dismissal was followed by skipper Eoin Morgan walking off the field. But that invited all-rounder Liam Livingstone on the crease, who took charge of the game from the word go. After taking a single off the first ball that he faced, he smashed Philippe Boissevain for 32 runs off his next six deliveries to take his tally to 33 runs in mere seven balls.

As Buttler notched up the second-fastest ODI century for England, Livingstone registered the fastest ODI half-century by an English batter and the second-fastest overall in the history of ODI cricket. As the duo created and broke some major records, they helped England post the highest ODI total of 498/4.

Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitter reacted to England’s batting show:
