After their performance on Day-1 of the third Test against Australia, England would have been quite contented. They were clearly in the driver’s seat and with no Steve Smith in the opposition line-up, it was their best chance to make their mark. Australia’s 179 in the first innings isn’t really a huge score and the hosts would have clearly eyed a massive first innings total.
However, things hardly panned out as per their plans. It was quite an embarrassing performance as the team was bowled out for just 67 runs – their lowest score against Australia since 1948. There was surely some movement on offer and that would have tested any batsman. Yet, the Brits could have applied themselves much better. Their shot selection on Day-2 stooped to a new low. Batsmen were gifting the opposition with their wickets and only Joe Denly got to the double figures.
Josh Hazlewood is the destroyed in-chief
Throughout their innings, England kept losing wickets at regular intervals. It started with the dismissal of Jason Roy who was gone for 9 runs. The likes of Joe Root, Rory Burns, and Ben Stokes followed him to the pavilion after getting minimal scores. No one really stood up to the occasion and tried to rescue the team. The wrath of Josh Hazlewood and James Pattinson was a little too much to take for the Englishmen.
They tried to extract even the slightest possible extra bit of movement to trick the batsmen. Then, Pat Cummins kicked in with a great spell in the post-lunch session where he dismissed Chris Woakes of the first ball. He then followed it up with the wicket of Jofra Archer as well. It was Hazlewood yet again who finished the customaries by dismissing Jack Leach for 1 run. He picked up a five-wicket haul and looked pumped.
While Pat Cummins accounted for three scalps, Pattinson picked up two. Australia didn’t even have to utilise the services of Nathan Lyon much in the game. Twitterati couldn’t stop singing praise for this pace troika of Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and James Pattinson. They brutally trolled England for their poor batting display.
Here is how the fans reacted to England’s performance:

Wow can’t quite believe what I’ve just watched. Outstanding from the Aussies and probably no words could describe the Poms.

Lead of 112 after getting dismissed for 179. Shows you that if you can’t bat in challenging conditions, batting second won’t be of much help. Good chance for Australia to retain #TheAshes in Headingly only. Even without Smith.
