After a thrilling season opener in the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League, the action moved north to Mohali. The home side, Kings XI Punjab, hosted the Delhi Daredevils in the first day game of the season. The track at the venue looked like an absolute belter and as the things stand at the half way stage in the game, the runs have indeed come in aplenty. The match was an ideal match up between two sides who have come up with new look sides this season.
Also, the two sides saw themselves playing under new skippers this season. At the toss, it was the KXIP skipper Ravichandran Ashwin who won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Delhi Daredevils went with the overseas quartet of Colin Munro, Chris Morris, Trent Boult, and Dan Christian. On the other hand, the hosts played with David Miller, Marcus Stoinis, Andrew Tye, and debutante Mujeeb Rahman. Rahman, at the bare age of 17, became the youngest player to play in the IPL.
Colin Munro and Gautam Gambhir opened the innings for the Delhi Daredevils. Mujeeb ur Rahman made short work of Munro and took only 3 deliveries to take his first wicket in the IPL. Munro’s reverse sweep did not pull off and he ended up being hit plumb in front of the stump. Shreyas Iyer (11) and Vijay Shankar (13) could not do much either but stayed with Gambhir for a brief while.
Meanwhile, at the other end, Gambhir kept the scorecard ticking with some special liking towards the bowling of Axar Patel. He raced past his 36th fifty in the IPL – the joint most by any player in the tournament history. Gambhir found an able partner in Rishabh Pant, who looked in threatening form. Pant scored 28 off just 13 deliveries before becoming Rahman’s second wicket of the day.
Gambhir also perished soon after after falling short of his crease with a direct hit from Mujeeb. Gambhir top scored in the innings with his 42-ball 55. Some late hitting from Chris Morris (27* off 16 balls) and Daniel Christian (13 off 12 balls) saw Delhi Daredevils finish with 166/7 in their stipulated 20 overs. Mujeeb was the pick of the bowlers for KXIP with figures of 2/28 in his four overs.
Here is how the fans reacted to the Delhi Daredevils innings:

Another fifty for #Gambhir. Why I am saying another fifty in his first game in this #ipl is because he is one cosistent player in Indian cricket. #KXIPvDD

Kent Cricket Live is making IPL look like a serious tournament while Extra Innings T20 made it look like a festival. I'm missing every bit of it, even that stupid 'Thokko meter'. #KXIPvDD

DD in trouble. Haven’t really understood the batting order. Shankar before Pant. Tewatia before Morris. #KXIPvDD #IPL

No Nadeem….if that’s got anything to do with two lefties in KXIP, I’ll be very disappointed. No one’s more underrated than Nadeem in the IPL. #KXIPvDD
