Twitter Reactions: Glenn Maxwell lost his bat but scored his maiden Test hundred
Glenn Maxwell played the best Test knock of his uncertain Test career that has seen him feature in just three matches after making his debut 4 years ago. At Ranchi on a subcontinent wicket that was best suited for batting he capitalized on the opportunity and went on to score his maiden Test century. He resumed day 2 on 82 and broke his bat on the very first ball but that didn’t deter him and he reached the triple figures after batting for 180 deliveries.
Ahead of the third Test match against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Australia made two forced changes. They brought in Pat Cummins and Glenn Maxwell for the injured duo of Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Marsh. While Cummins was the best replacement for Starc they had another allround option to chose in Marcus Stoinis but skipper Steve Smith and the management decided to back Maxwell how also bowls part time spin.
Their decision faired off on the very first day of the Test match. Maxwell walked out in the middle to join skipper Smith after the dismissal of Peter Handscomb, Australia had got the runs on the board but 4 down at 140 needed to consolidate from that position. The Smith-Maxwell partnership denied India any further success on the day and they took the team over the 300-run mark.
Maxwell couldn’t carry on for longer after his hundred and edged a Ravindra Jadeja delivery to wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. He plundered 9 boundaries and two big sixes in his 185-ball stay in the middle that has certainly enhanced his reputation as a Test player. This knock will give him and Australia a lot of confidence as they look to find a stable batsman for the No.6 slot.
