Demolishing Australian batsman, Glenn Maxwell had to prove more than a point when he was selected for the T20I series against Sri Lanka. He was dropped by the selectors for the ODI series and that would have definitely hurt him. In the game, as Sri Lanka elected to bowl first Maxwell was promoted to open the inning along with skipper David Warner.

The duo started off in typical style, playing their natural shots. Maxwell, in particular, played some crisp cover drives whereas Warner focused on the shot he had been talking about ahead of the game to tackle spin – sweep. The skipper fell soon attempting the same stroke but Maxie was in no mood to let go off this opportunity. He kept going with the attacking approach against each of the Sri Lankan bowlers introduced by Dinesh Chandimal.

The Big Show soon got to his fifty and was the first fifty by an Aussie batsman opening the batting for the first time. He needed just 27 balls to get there. The momentum of the inning only got better as the overs increased and literally no Sri Lankan on the night had an idea or a delivery to dismiss Maxwell. When there was a rare chance, the fielders dropping them down ensured he survived.

He bypassed his best T20I score of 75 and soon the century was in sights. He got to his maiden T20I ton off 49 balls with the help of 11 fours and 5 sixes. Maxwell’s inning flourished further and he was inching towards Aaron Finch’s record for the highest individual T20I score of 156. But that was not to be as Travis Head kept most of the strike and scored a quickfire 18-ball 45 to help the team get to 263/3 in 20 overs. With that, Australia also shattered Sri Lanka’s record for the highest team total in the format.
