Another day and another win for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2021! A sensational hundred from Glenn Maxwell goes in vain as the Stars suffered a seven-wicket win despite posting a brilliant total on the board. Momentum rode on a roller-coaster throughout the clash as the proceedings went right down to the wire. However, Josh Philippe’s quickfire 99 meant the Sixers advance to the top of team standings.

Earlier in the game, Sydney Sixers won the toss and opted to bowl at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. The decision proved to be spot on as openers Joe Clarke and Marcus Stoinis were back in the hut with just two runs on the board. While the Sixers made a sensational start to the game, skipper Glenn Maxwell led Stars comeback with a sensational knock.

The 33-year-old was pretty watchful at the start as his side was recovering from the early blows. The dasher, however, shifted gears as the game progressed and unleashed his best. Maxwell scored runs for fun and advanced to his maiden BBL ton. He slammed 103 runs off 57 balls in total as the Stars slammed 177/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Notably, Sixers used six bowlers in the game but only Chris Jordan and Steve O’Keefe ended with impressive figures.

Chasing the challenging target, the defending champions lost opener James Vince cheaply. However, Josh Philippe continued his merry way of scoring runs and kept his side in the hunt. He was well supported by skipper Moises Henriques, who was happy to take the backseat. The duo added 54 runs for the first wicket and the game seemed hanging in balance.

In fact, momentum was riding on a rollercoaster in the contest. Philippe, however, shifted gears in the end overs and played some staggering shots in the end overs. Although he couldn’t get the three-figure mark, his 99 meant the Sixers crossed the line in 19.4 overs, winning the contest by seven wickets. The 24-year-old was also named the Player of the Match for his exceptional effeort.

Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitterati reacted to Sydney Sixers’ staggering win:
