Welsh Fire signed off from the Men’s Hundred with a three-wicket win over London Spirit on Wednesday, August 18 at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. The Spirit, on the other hand, finished as the cellar dwellers, having managed only three points from one win and a washed-off match.

Jos Inglis shows his class

After being inserted into bat first, the Spirit racked up 163 for the loss of five wickets. Josh Inglis, who earned an Australia call-up for the T20 World Cup 2021, showed his worth. The right-hander scored 72 runs off 45 balls. His knock was laced with seven glorious fours and three massive sixes.

Joe Cracknell’s 35 and skipper Eoin Morgan’s 25 lent Inglis the apt support. Ryan Higgins was impressive for the Fire as he picked up three crucial wickets of Inglis, Cracknell and Morgan. He gave away only 21 runs in his spell of 20 balls. Luke Fletcher and Matthew Critchley got one wicket each.

Phillips comes to the party

The Fire got off to a horrendous start as Tom Banton and David Lloyd couldn’t open their accounts. Blake Cullen picked up both the openers to push the hosts on the backfoot. Bradley Wheal joined in and got rid of opposition skipper Ben Duckett for six and reduced the Fire to 20 for three in 15 balls.

From thereon, Glenn Phillips took charge. The right-hander stitched a partnership of 93 runs with Leus du Plooy off 48 balls. He stayed not out on 80 off 35 with five fours and seven sixes. Even as Plooy scored 26, Joshua Cobb and Qais Ahmad chipped in with scores of 28 and 13 respectively.

We have a team-first mentality, says Glenn Phillips

Duckett was impressed with how his team performed in their last game of the inaugural Hundred. Phillips, who got the Player of the Match award, was also over the moon after his knock and his team’s win.

“It’s great to have a full crowd and it was great to put on a game like that for them. It could have been worse in the first half. They were around par, but we started the chase well, and the guys, in the end, did well to finish it off. No one wants to finish at the bottom, and it was a chance for people like Higgins to come in and show what they can do,” Duckett told.

“The hundred was on my mind, but we have a team-first mentality. Qais managed to finish it with a couple of balls to go, so we’re happy. Great to have so many people. It was nice and loud from the crowd. I just watch it and hit it, the more I think, the worse it is,” Phillips said.
