History was rewritten at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore as Gujarat went on to win their first ever Ranji Trophy title with an enthralling win over defending champions Mumbai. Chasing a huge 312-run target in the last innings skipper Parthiv Patel’s clinical knock helped the team get over the line quite comfortably.
Earlier in the morning at 89/3, when Samit Gohel walked back to the pavilion owing to a controversial decision, Gujarat were in trouble. It seemed the Khadus Army Mumbai could well pull it off if they got a couple of wickets more from that position. A turnaround seemed possible at that stage.
However, captain Parthiv had some other plans. Leading from the front, he slammed a brilliant 143 runs to set the platform for a Gujarat victory. Whacking 24 boundaries, Parthiv played a match winning innings at the stage where it mattered the most.
Manpreet Juneja who also scored a half century, combined an 116-run partnership with Parthiv for the fourth wicket to rescue Gujarat out of the woods. Later Rujul Bhatt scored 27 not out along with Chirag Gandhi’s 11 (7)* to guide Gujarat to their first ever Ranji Trophy win.
It was a terrific game of cricket with both sides fighting it out till the final session of Day 5. And it surely took a brilliant performance by Gujarat side to outclass the 41 time Ranji champions. Parthiv Patel was undoubtedly rewarded the man of the match for playing a sublime knock under pressure.
Twitter enjoyed a wonderful test match on a Saturday evening ending with Gujarat winning their maiden title. There was some adulation of Manpreet Juneja but the man who stole the thunder was none other than Parthiv Patel. Ending the title drought, Parthiv gained lots of accolades from everyone.
