The Headingley Test between England and India has moved forward quite a lot on the first day itself. Virat Kohli winning the toss was the only good thing for the visitors to happen or was it? He had no hesitation in opting to bat first and what followed was a brilliant exhibition of swing bowling from the veteran pacer James Anderson. By the end of the day, India were way behind in the Test and England are right on top.
It all started with KL Rahul looking for a drive in the very first over itself only to edge it to the wicketkeeper Jos Buttler. Anderson bowled superbly making the ball talk then to nip out Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli to leave India reeling at 21/3. Rohit Sharma was looking compact in his defense then and Ajinkya Rahane joined him to rebuild the innings.
The duo denied the relentless England bowlers for 15 overs and just when things started to settle down, Rahane poked at one at the stroke of lunch while on 18. The wicket triggered a collapse on the other side of lunch break and India lost their remaining wickets for just 21 runs.
There was nothing to ride home about as the batsmen played poor strokes, especially hanging the bat outside the off-stump for harmless deliveries. After Anderson gave them an impeccable start, the rest of the bowlers in Ollie Robinson, Sam Curran and Craig Overton didn’t give an inch to India and kept striking consistently.
India never recovered from the early blows and eventually ended up getting bowled out for just 78 runs in the 41 over of the day. Only Rohit and Rahane could reach the double figures and three batsmen bagged a duck.
Hameed and Burns frustrate India
India needed early wickets desperately to have any chance of making a comeback. They knew the top three of England was under extreme pressure after what happened in the last game. However, the first over from Ishant Sharma filled with wides and no-balls somewhat indicated it was going to be a long day for them. Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns, a new opening pair for England, literally blunted the opposition.
The duo played and missed a few but they took full advantage of the best batting conditions on offer. India’s bowlers looked a bit off-colour probably due to the poor batting effort earlier in the day. The credit should also go to Burns and Hameed who batted superbly. The latter displayed his class playing the ball on the backfoot and punching in style.
He scored runs square of the wicket more while Burns, as usual, churned out runs the hard way. Jasprit Bumrah created a chance late in the day but such was India’s luck that Rohit Sharma dropped Hameed in the second slip. The ball ran to the boundary which also brought up the opener’s fifty.
England openers went unscathed to the stumps as they ended the day on 120/0 with the first innings lead already being 42 runs. The visitors will have to bowl extremely well in the first session on Day 2 to make a comeback in this Test or it could be another long day and Test for them.

England’s bowling was great .. but I expect that with the ball moving around .. it’s this opening partnership that is the best part of the day though .. 👍👍 #ENGvIND

During this break England surely looked like a team who prepared well. Bowling Fuller lengths was one such example. #INDvENG

Teams in past have won Test matches after being bowled out for less than 78. Can India do it? #INDvENG #IndvsEng

What an outstanding and entertaining start to day 1. Good all round performance from the England bowlers👏👏
Let’s see how the Indian bowlers respond to this!— Azhar Mahmood (@AzharMahmood11) August 25, 2021
Cricket is so weird. How can you go from the contrast of elation and dejection at Lord's to the complete role reversal right here, right now. So, so weird. #ENGvIND

Stumps on Day 1 – England lead by 42 runs in the first innings with 10 wickets in hand – first, bowlers bundled out India for just 78 runs then Hameed and Burns scored fifties – A day to remember for England in this summer.

One of the most disappointing days of cricket both with bat and ball. Everything went wrong including the toss if you know what I mean. #ENGvsIND
