Sydney Thunder started the BBL with two resounding wins. But their campaign has had jitters in the last three games. After, the team survived Rashid Khan’s threat, winning by three runs, they lost to the Melbourne Stars by three wickets. At the Sydney Showground Stadium, Callum Ferguson and Co also lost their top spot in the points table. The Stars are the new table-toppers with four victories.

Haris Rauf wreaks havoc

The Thunder didn’t make the best of starts after electing to bat first. Both the openers, Alex Hales and Usman Khawaja, perished to Glenn Maxwell. Callum Ferguson found the boundary twice before Haris Rauf got rid of him. Matthew Gilkes also hit four boundaries, but could never get out of second gear. Clint Hinchcliffe dismissed him. Adam Zampa got Chris Morris to pick the fifth Thunder wicket.

Rauf castled Daniel Sams to get rid of another batter cheaply. Rauf was arguably the Stars’ standout bowler, finishing with impressive numbers of 4-0-24-0. For the Stars, Alex Ross was on top of his game as he scored 40 off 32 with two fours and as many sixes. But it was Arjun Nair’s cameo of 17 off 11 with three fours that helped the Thunder put up a competitive score of 142 in 20 overs.

Stars survive batting collapse

The Stars made a horrid start as well. Nic Maddinson fell prey to Sams for a duck. Sams bowled a wicket-maiden and got the Thunder back into the contest. However, Marcus Stoinis (58) and Nick Larkin (65) put their heads down and stitched together a stand of 123 runs off 92 balls. The duo put the Stars in the driver’s seat. Larkin was the more attacking off the two, striking at a decent 144.44.

Chris Morris pinned Larkin with a short ball, but by then the target was brought down to 19 off 22 balls. In the same over, Morris picked up his second wicket in the form of Stoinis, who played the sheet anchor’s role. Sams came back with the wickets of Maxwell and Ben Dunk. The Stars suffered a few hiccups and with two runs needed off the last over, they won with two deliveries to spare.
