All-rounder Sophie Molineux started her captaincy career on a bright note as Melbourne Renegades beat Hobart Hurricanes by six wickets in match two of the ongoing Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). Renegades’ spin twins Molineux and leg spinner Georgia Wareham applied the spin choke to perfection as the duo’s five wickets bundled Hurricanes out to just 121.

Chasing a modest target, skipper Molineux started things off positively before an untimely run out by Richa Ghosh cut short her promising innings of 16 runs. That wicket brought in-form batter, Jemimah Rodrigues, to the crease. The batter looked good right from the onset and was able to find gaps regularly. She formed a crucial 68-run partnership with Courtney Webb before she lost her wicket to Hurricanes pacer Belinda Vakarewa. With that wicket, Renegades slipped a bit as they lost two more wickets.

With some pressure building, India T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur had to wade a tricky little period. But she also needed a bit of support from the other end. Wareham, who was earlier brilliant with the ball in hand, supported Kaur, and together the duo took the team home with six wickets in hand. Kaur finished things off in style by hitting the winning runs and remaining unbeaten on 24 runs to take Renegades home with four balls to spare.

Wareham and Molineux show restrict Hurricanes to just 121

Earlier in the day, it was the Molineux and Wareham show that derailed the promising-looking Hurricanes batting lineup. Starting her WBBL captaincy stint, Rachel Priest looked threatening for her 21 off 24 balls before Carly Leeson picked her wicket. A lot rested on the experienced South African batter Mignon du Preez but she couldn’t do much with the bat as Wareham trapped her in front.  From there on, regular wickets by Renegades bowlers put constant pressure on Hurricanes batters.

There was no momentum whatsoever, and that led to Hurricanes being bundled out for just 121. If leg spinner Wareham was spot on with her line lengths, then Molineux was ever so economical giving away just 12 runs in her four overs. The duo’s eight overs went for just 25 runs was the turning point of the match. Even the usually good players of spin Du Preez and Richa Ghosh found the going tough.
