Karachi Kings have found it tough to adapt to the conditions in Abu Dhabi as they slumped to their third defeat on the trot in the 2021 edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The team, led by Imad Wasim, on Tuesday, June 15, lost to the Peshawar Zalmi by six wickets. The drubbing meant that the Kings got pushed down to the fifth position in the table with two matches remaining.

Kings huff and puff

After being put in to bat first, the Kings lost Babar Azam to opposition skipper Wahab Riaz in the very first over. Martin Guptill’s dry run in the tournament continued as he perished to Sameen Gul. Chadwick Walton failed to open his account either. Amidst the fall of wickets, Sharjeel Khan played an uncharacteristic knock of 25 runs off 24 balls after which he became Wahab’s second victim.

In the powerplay, the Kings managed 33 runs and lost three wickets, and needed a helping hand. Skipper Imad tried his heart out in a painstaking 31-ball 19 before Wahab sent him back. In the end, Abbas Afridi’s unbeaten 18-ball 27 with one four and three sixes took Karachi past the 100-run mark. For the Zalmi, Abrar Ahmed was hard to deal with as well as he picked up three crucial wickets.

Hazratullah go berserk in Abu Dhabi

While chasing the modest target of 109, the Kings didn’t have a great start as Aamer Yamin accounted for Kamran Akmal’s wicket. However, after the first wicket fell with the score at 15, Hazratullah Zazai, playing his first match of the ongoing PSL, came to the party. The left-hander blazed away and made sure that the Zalmi take the initiative with 76 runs in the powerplay.

The Afghanistan batter racked up a half-century off 15 balls and dashed the Kings’ hopes of a comeback. The southpaw went on to score a 26-ball 63 with eight fours and four sixes. The Kings picked up three late wickets, but they were only to mitigate the damage caused earlier. Fast bowler Mohammad Amir had another off day as he went for 31 runs in the two overs he bowled.
