The Melbourne Stars had become an unstoppable force in the 2019-20 edition of the BBL. The team, led by Glenn Maxwell, was brimming with confidence, winning eight matches on the trot. In the end, law of averages caught up with them. The Sydney Sixers beat them by 21 runs (DLS Method) at the SCG to cease their winning streak. The Sixers also consolidated their position at the top of the table.
Henriques bashes the Stars
After being put in to bat, the Sixers didn’t have the best of starts. In the first five overs, they could manage 26 runs. Sandeep Lamichhane got rid of both the openers, Josh Phillippe and Daniel Hughes, in the fifth over. In between, there was a rain delay and the match was pruned down to 14 overs per side. Moises Henriques and James Vince stepped on the gas and exerted some pressure on the Stars.
The duo put on 114 runs off a mere 50 balls for the third wicket. Henriques was the more brutal off the two, scoring 72 from 31 with a couple of fours and eight sixes. Vince didn’t die wondering either. He smacked two sixes and a boundary to notch a quickfire 22-ball 41. Daniel Worrall broke the stand, but the damage had already been done. In the end, the home team managed 143 for four.
Stoinis’ efforts go in vain
The Stars got off to a flying start as they scored 35 in three overs courtesy Hilton Cartwright’s 10-ball 21. Once he got out, barring Marcus Stoinis, the rest of the Stars’ batting flattered to deceive. Nic Maddinson couldn’t get his timing right before he was castled by Ben Dwarshuis, who started with a wicket-maiden. While Stoinis kept the scoreboard ticking, the required rate kept climbing alarmingly.
He got to his fifty off 34 balls with a boundary off Nathan Lyon. Then he deposited the off-spinner for a couple of sixes. To his dismay, the tweaker got rid of him as the batter holed out to Henriques at midwicket. From there, the onus was on Glenn Maxwell to keep the Stars alive. However, he found the going tough and managed 12 off 13 after which Tom Curran sent him back to the pavilion.
Here’s how Twitterati lauded the Sixers for the win: –

Not sending Glenn Maxwell in at No.3 in a shortened T20 game is incomprehensible and a sackable offence. #BBL09

Glenn Maxwell batting four when chasing 10.5 an over in a 14 over game… that Maddinson innings is the prime example of where you should retire a batsman out as a coach

It’s been said plenty this season, but Glenn Maxwell’s batting order choices are truly bizarre. Surely in a 14 over game he gets himself out there at first drop. #BBL09
