Hobart Hurricanes got off to a superlative start to the 2018-19 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL), beating Brisbane Heat, led by Chris Lynn, by 15 runs (DLS Method), in a rain-curtailed match at Carrara Oval in Queensland. The Heat had a shambolic season last time around, having finished at the seventh position in the points table, and they would definitely not be satisfied with how they started.

Short shoulders the batting

After rain frustrated everyone, Heat won the toss and opted to bowl first. Most of the Hurricanes’ batsmen strained, but left-handed batsman D’Arcy Short held one end and scored a masterful knock of 67 runs from 52 deliveries with the help of four boundaries and as many sixes. His fellow opener, Matthew Wade was the first wicket to fall as he was picked up by tweaker Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Right-hander Alex Doolan became Mujeeb’s second victim. Ben McDermott and George Bailey threatened with knocks of 25 and 22 respectively, but both couldn’t capitalise on the starts. Simon Milenko cleared the ropes a couple of times to help the Hurricanes post 159 in 19 overs. From the Heat’s perspective, Mujeeb and right-arm speedster Mark Steketee nipped out two wickets each.

Cutting’s effort in vain

The target was a stiff one for the Heat and they got off to a horrendous start as veteran Brendon McCullum perished to a run-out. His partner Max Bryant threw the kitchen sink at everyone and put 30 runs from 15 balls to inject momentum into the innings, however, Johan Botha accounted for his wicket in the fifth over. Joe Burns and Sam Heazlett couldn’t make an impact and fell for 4 and 0 respectively.

Nevertheless, Ben Cutting wasn’t ready to drop the gun and he notched 58 runs from 32 balls with two fours and five sixes to keep the Heat in contention for victory. To the Heat’s dismay, Jofra Archer nipped him out in the 18th over. The lower order could contribute nothing as Lynn’s team slumped to their second defeat of the season. James Faulkner was Hobart’s most successful bowler with three wickets.
