Hobart Hurricanes defeated the Melbourne Renegades by 2 wickets in a high-scoring thriller at MCG to keep their hopes in the tournament alive. Courtesy their win, the Hurricanes moved to the 5th spot with 3 wins and 4 losses to their name while Renegades slipped to the 6th position with 2 wins and 4 losses. Batting first the Melbourne Renegades posted a mammoth 222 in their allotted 20 overs courtesy half-centuries from Aaron Finch and Tom Cooper.
Despite losing two quick wickets the visitors romped home in the last ball of the innings courtesy a brilliant match-winning 114 of 52 balls by Ben McDermott. The Renegades began pretty well and shared a 42 run stand for the opening wicket before Marcus Harris was dismissed in the 5th over. Cameron White coming in next also shared an impressive stand with Captain Aaron Finch and by the time he was dismissed the duo had taken the total to 116/2 in 12 overs.
Finch completed a brilliant half-century but the much-needed late impetus was provided by Tom Cooper and Thisara Perera who shared a 42 runs stand in 16 deliveries to propel their total to 222. While Tom Cooper struck 7 fours and two sixes during his innings of 53 of 24 deliveries, Thisara Pera remained unbeaten on 28 of 11 balls, striking 3 fours and a solitary six.
The visitors went off to a poor start and lost both the openers Tim Paine and D’Arcy Short very cheaply. Ben McDermott and George Bailey started resurrecting the innings and shared a mammoth stand for the 4th wicket. McDermott was simply unstoppable as he kept smashing all the bowlers to the nooks and corners of MCG. Bailey played the 2nd fiddle but was impressive in his own rights with a 42 balls 59 which included 3 fours and a couple of sixes.

McDermott was eventually dismissed in the 16th over after scoring a magnificent century, an innings constructed with 8 fours and 9 hits over the fence. Though the match was in Hurricanes’ favour, they kept losing wickets and almost surrendered the match before a last over heroic by Stuart Broad helped them to register a 2 wicket win.
Twitteratti was pretty active throughout the match and there were certain tweets which described the proceedings in the best possible way. Here are some of the best tweets from the match:
