The rain had the final say on the fourth day of the last Test between Australia and India. Only 25.3 overs of play was possible on the day and such was the dominance of the visitors that they can still eke out a victory on the last day. The scenes at the SCG were gloomy all day and the floodlights were on early in the morning itself as only the middle session of play was possible in which India accounted for four scalps.

Australia resumed at 236/6 with their overnight batsmen Pat Cummins and Peter Handscomb walking out to bat. Soon after Ravindra Jadeja’s over was finished, India took the second new ball and reaped rich rewards straight away. Mohammed Shami’s short delivery scooted under Cummins’ bat to disturb his timber after batting so well last night for his 25.

Mitchell Starc then threw his bat at everything as the eighth wicket stand added 20 runs in less than five overs. However, soon Jasprit Bumrah got into the action to clean up Handscomb who seemed to have sorted his technique out in this innings.

Kuldeep takes a five-wicket haul

Nathan Lyon was pinned in front of the stumps by the chinaman Kuldeep Yadav for a duck and the end seemed nigh for the Aussies. But once again their never give up attitude came to the fore. The last wicket pair of Josh Hazlewood and Starc fought bravely for close to 14 overs. They propelled the team’s score to 300 from 258/9 to reduce the deficit ever so slightly.

Frankly, they were only delaying the inevitable but still, the resilience which the duo showed was something to learn for the top-order of the home side. Kuldeep was the star in the end as he bowled a wrong’un to leave Hazlewood baffled and the umpire was quick to raise his finger. They were bundled out for 300 and were behind by a massive 322 runs.

Virat Kohli, this time around, wasn’t afraid to enforce the follow-on and become the first captain to do so for Australia at home since 1988. The hosts scored 4 runs in the couple of overs in the second innings. The play was stopped due to bad light then and never resumed leaving India with only 98 overs to force a famous 3-1 series victory over Australia.
