After a dismal performance in the first ODI, India managed to make amends at Mohali. Riding on a marvellous double century by Rohit Sharma, India squared the series 1-1. The Sri Lankans had too much to chase in the end as they fell short by runs.
It was skipper Thisara Perera who won the toss as Sri Lanka elected to bowl first. Rohit admitted he would’ve bowled too, only to realize later how wrong he could’ve been. India brought in debutant Washington Sundar in place of Kuldeep Yadav. As for Sri Lanka, they had an unchanged XI from their last game.
Batting first, India were off to a sensational start. Compared to the first game where the whole team was bundled for 112 runs, it was completely the opposite scenario today. Both Shikhar Dhawan and skipper Rohit combined for a splendid 115-run partnership for the first wicket.
While Dhawan got out for 68, Shreyas Iyer made full use of his opportunity. Coming out at No.3, the youngster batted brilliantly for his knock of 88 (70). He fell short of what would have been a well deserved hundred. He and Rohit Sharma combined for a splendour partnership of 213 runs for the second wicket.
However, the star of the day was Rohit Sharma. The batsman produced some of the most delicate shots ever. While he composed some magnificent shots on his way to the century, it was the next hundred runs that unleashed the beast out of him. Rohit became the first ever cricketer to score 3 double centuries in One-Day Internationals.
India raced their way to an astounding total of 392/4. Skipper Thisara Perera was amongst the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers with three wickets. However, he too was taken to the cleaners. Sachith Pathirana also managed to get the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan. Angelo Mathews bowled well though he had to restrict him to just four overs due to injury.
As for Sri Lanka, they were reduced to 30/2 inside the powerplay overs. Both openers Danushka Gunathilaka and Upul Tharanga were dismissed cheaply. Lahiru Thirimanne who has been under fire for a poor string of scores continued to disappoint. Sri Lanka were well on the back foot with 60/3.
Angelo Mathews like always tried to be the lone warrior for the Islanders. While he batted fantastically for his second century in ODIs, the Sri Lankan innings continued to falter from the other end. The likes of Niroshan Dickwella and Asela Gunaratne tried to prolong their stay at the crease but failed in their quest.
Sri Lanka were restricted to 251/8 in their quota of 50 overs as India managed to level the series. Yuzvendra Chahal managed to pick three wickets as all bowlers were amongst the wickets. Twitter was filled with some superb tweets for cricketers right from Rohit Sharma to MS Dhoni to Angelo Mathews.
Here are some of the best tweets from the game:

Sunil Gavaskar criticizing Angelo Mathews for not trying to win the match for Sri Lanka. The man who once scored 36* off 174 balls is criticizing a batsman for not trying to win a match. #IndvSL

Isn't Gunaratne changing his grip to play these switch hits? Shouldn't this be made illegal if fake fielding is a problem. Reverse sweep as well is so unfair on the bowler and field side. #INDvSL

First wicket for Washington Sundar on debut and the ball as much of a beauty as his surname. #INDvSL
— Sameer Allana (@HitmanCricket) December 13, 2017
What does the inclusion of #WashingtonSundar mean to #Ashwin's chances of making a comeback into the ODI side? This is clear indication that Ashwin is now looked upon as a Test specialist. #Chahal #Kuldeep #Axar & now #Washi means the blue jersey is unlikely. #INDvSL

SL have some fine cricketers but these days ODI cricket is mainly about flat decks and runs. You need enough variety in your bowling and a team packed with strokemakers down to 8-9 or even 10.

Angelo Mathews is Sri Lanka's lone warrior with seniority, experience and class. They don't even have a good XI, forget bench #IndvSL
