In what was yet another marvellous all-round performance by India, they went on to clinch the series 4-1. The Nagpur crowd witnessed some outstanding show by the home team as the successfully registered a run chase, winning by 7 wickets.
Earlier in the day, it was skipper Steve Smith who won the toss as Australia elected to bat first again. The Australians had all-rounder James Faulkner coming in for pacer Kane Richardson. As for the Indians, they made three changes as Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav were brought in place of Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal.
David Warner and Aaron Finch again provided a good start to the Australian innings. While Finch got out, Warner went on to score his 17th half-century before throwing it away. Skipper Steve Smith ‘s cheap dismissal meant the job of taking the Australian total to something big was upto the struggling middle order.
Peter Handscomb continued to disappoint, Travis Head tried to rescue Australia alongside Marcus Stoinis. However, both ended up getting dismissed in their 40s. In the end, Matthew Wade and James Faulkner tried to provide a late charge. However, some brilliant death bowling by Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar restricted them from going big in the death. In the end, Australia scored 242/9 in their quota of 50 overs.
Axar Patel had stupendous bowling figures of 3/38. Jasprit Bumrah also got a couple of wickets. Hardik Pandya got the wicket of Finch but he bowled only two overs. Kedhar Jadhav got the priceless wicket of skipper Steve Smith.
Chasing a total of 243, Rohit Sharma began really slow. While Ajinkya Rahane got some runs, Rohit Sharma failed to get off the mark for the first 13 balls. However, the way he transformed his batting later into the innings was quite sensational. He and Rahane put up a 124 runs partnership for the first wicket as they gave India a splendour start.
While Rahane scored a half-century, Rohit Sharma went on to score a spectacular hundred. It was his 14th century in One Day Internationals and in the process, he also went on to complete 6000 ODI runs. By the time he got out, India already had their hands on the target. Manish Pandey hit consecutive boundaries as India went on to win by 7 wickets.
