India Women have created history by qualifying for their maiden T20 World Cup final. It wasn’t the ideal way though for Harmanpreet Kaur and her side as the rain didn’t subside in Sydney. India, by the virtue of topping the group in the league stage, made it to the title clash on Sunday (March 8)which is also the International Women’s Day.
Though rain had the final say in the semi-final nothing can be taken away from the Women in Blue for playing some exceptional cricket in the group stage. Rather they were the only team to win all the four matches and stay unbeaten and have been rewarded for the same.
It wasn’t the easiest roads for them by any means. The tournament favourites Australia were up against India in the opening game where India were behind the eight ball for the most parts. However, everything changed in the second half of Australia’s innings. Poonam Yadav was introduced into the attack and she literally ran through the opposition line-up with her variations.
Shafali Verma takes over
Shafali Verma has been the star player for India thus far in the Women’s T20 World Cup. In every game, she has managed to give India quick starts in the powerplay which has eventually proved to be decisive as the scores around 130-140 have been enough on slow tracks. Apart from her, Deepti Sharma’s all-round skills and the bowling attack comprising of Shikha Pandey, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Radha Yadav and Poonam Yadav have choked the opposition’s run flow.
The most intriguing thing about India’s run in this World Cup is the players apart from Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur stepping up in every game. The star duo is yet to contribute anything significant to the team and now will be hoping to make amends in the final at the MCG. While Mandhana has scored only 38 runs in three outings, the Indian skipper has mustered a mere 26 runs so far.
Having qualified for the finals now, India Women will be keen to go all the way this time around after missing out in 2017 when they lost to England in the Women’s ODI World Cup at Lord’s. Meanwhile, Twitterati was elated to see their favourite team qualify for the final and congratulated them for the same.
Here’s how Twitter reacted:

England became world champions recently without actually winning the final and have now been eliminated from a world cup without actually losing their semifinal #T20WorldCup

Biggest stand-alone women’s event in history on Australian soil and a finalist is decided because of a few hour’s rain. No back-up option provided in the playing conditions despite any number of options available to world cricket. #T20WorldCup

Absolutely heartbroken for the England Cricket girls. Knocked out of the T20 World Cup because of the weather.
I only think it’s only fair to call the second game off as well now @CricketAus ? 😉😉#T20WorldCup #BBCCricket #WeAreEngland pic.twitter.com/MeDT0Xr36r
