The Indian innings resumed on Day 2 as the scoreboard reflected 399/3. Cheteshwar Pujara went on to complete 150 runs; his 6th in the longest format of the game. Ajinkya Rahane also scored a half century. However, both the overnight batters failed to prolong their stay at the crease as they were dismissed in quick succession.

What followed was another classic act from Ravichandran Ashwin with the bat. While he got out three short of a half century he displayed tremendous grit all over. Wriddhiman Saha fell prey to the Sri Lankan skipper Rangana Herath who got his first wicket in the game after toiling hard for 31 overs.

At 517/8, it seemed the Indian batting was nearing its end but the hosts were up for a surprise. They were taken aback as Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami launched a catapult in the air. The duo combined for a 62-run partnership from just 51 balls for the ninth wicket. Moreover, it had six sixes, three from each.

While Hardik Pandya went on to score a half century on debut, Shami also scored a run-a-ball 30 as India managed to touch the 600-run mark before folding up. Nuwan Pradeep managed to grab a six wicket haul while Lahiru Kumara also took 3 wickets.

The hosts weren’t off to a great start as they lost Dimuth Karunaratne in the second over. Sri Lanka tried to recover from the early slump and just when it seemed they had covered up, Shami in his second spell had both Danushka Gunathilaka and Kusal Mendis head back to the pavilion.

On the brighter side, Upul Tharanga and Angelo Mathews scored fifties but the Sri Lankan batting kept tumbling. They are placed at 154/5 at stumps on Day 2, trailing by an improbable 446 runs with Mathews and Dilruwan Perera at the crease. Ashwin and Umesh Yadav got a wicket each alongside Shami’s twin strikes.
