The fixture said that Indian Women will take on the mighty Australian Women in the semi-final of ICC Women’s World Cup 2017. The contrast between the two teams was visible by their record prior to the match. The Women in Blue were eyeing for the spot in the all important final, where they had been only once in the past. On the other hand, the women from down under have played 8 WWC finals till now.
The Indian team had thrashed the stronger teams like England and New Zealand on their way here but who would have thought that a similar thrashing was on the platter for the yellow shirts? In a rain-curtailed match, Indian women scored 281 runs in 42 overs. On a day when Smriti Mandhana and Punam Raut didn’t contribute much, it was the time for Harmanpreet Kaur to set the stage on fire.
From a stage when India was struggling at 101/3 in 25 overs, Harmanpreet lifted the team up. Her exceptional knock of 171 runs from 115 balls will be cherished for a long time. The game-changing innings comprised of 20 boundaries and 7 sixes. 282 was the target set for Australia to win the tickets to the final.
Veteran Jhulan Goswami and Shikha Pandey picked up 2 wickets before the scoreboard could show double figures in the Australian account. The pressure increased gradually but the 105-run partnership between Elyse Villani and Ellyse Perry steadied the ship for the defenders. But three wickets in quick succession assured that Mithali Raj & Co. still held the upper hand in the game.
India’s spin trio of Sharma-Gayakwad-Yadav had a strong grip on the proceedings. Wickets kept on falling in quick successions and at 169/9, it looked as is big victory is waiting for India. But Alex Blackwell had different intentions. She was not ready to surrender so easily and made sure that the game went down to the wire.
Her 90 runs from 56 deliveries was the reason for the rise in blood pressure of the Indian cricket loyalists. From a stage when the match looked over, Blackwell stretched it down to the final two overs. 37 runs were needed from the last couple of overs and looking at the way she was striking the ball, anything was possible if Deepti Sharma hadn’t come to the rescue.
On the first ball of the penultimate over, Blackwell came down the strike, thereby exposed the three stumps. The ball missed the bat and as soon as it reached the wickets, there were celebrations all over India. Twitterati were all praises for the women who have made the nation proud.
Here are some of the best tweets after Team India’s win.

As much as India beat England in their first game I am actually more confident of them winning in the final vs India than vs Australia.
