Mumbai Indians (MI) somehow fail to produce such performances at the start of the tournament. Where was this vintage Ishan Kishan in the 10 matches before. He was literally smashing the ball all around the park as Kuldeep Yadav was smoked for four consecutive sixes The left-hander scored the joint second fastest half-century of the league this year and was dismissed on 62 off 21 deliveries. The game was changed dramatically during the period he batted and it was clear that the hosts were chasing a score around 200.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the toss and opted to field first on a small ground but they had to bowl well to restrict the in-form batting line-up of the visitors. The opening partnership of Evin Lewis and Suryakumar Yadav was broken early as the former was dismissed by Piyush Chawla. The skipper Rohit Sharma then walked in at number 3 to bat at his favourite venue. But the man in purple patch Surya was going great guns at the other end. He once again scored 36 runs at the top and looked sublime while he was there in the middle.
Everything was going fine for the hosts until Ishan Kishan strode out. He scored 62 runs in the 82-run partnership in the manic middle-overs period where the dynamics of the game changed completely. Though the run-scoring got a little slow for few overs after he got out, Mumbai were always on course for a score around 200. Rohit was settled by then as he started unfurling his big shots. Hardik Pandya too played a cameo of 19 runs off 13 balls. KKR bowled relatively well in this period and picked key wickets.
Dinesh Karthik surprisingly handed the ball to Chawla in the final over as he was taken apart for 22 runs thanks to Ben Cutting’s ability to tonk the ball. Eventually, the visitors posted a monumental total of 210 runs and now the ball was in the court of the KKR who bowled miserably.
Here’s how Twitter reacted during the course of the innings:

What a superb captaincy decision to send Cutting ahead of Krunal and Duminy. Think he has given @mipaltan a decisive advantage here. Super finish. @ImRo45 top move this.

Dinesh Karthik should handover keeping duties back to Uthappa and should himself field at mid off/on.
Will save a lot of time and energy.#KKRvMI— AJ (whistle podu) ? (@DarrKeAage) May 9, 2018

In the 15 IPL matches where a team batted first against KKR at the Eden since 2013, MI are the only side to successfully defend a total – defended 173 in 2017.#KKRvMI #IPL2018
