West Indies had a tight lid over India during the chase in yesterday’s game. India were expected to make light weight of the small target of 190 but a spirited effort led by skipper Jason Holder’s career best 5/27 turned the tide towards the home side. Miser spells from Kesrick Williams, Devendra Bishoo and Ashley Nurse in the middle overs had a crippling effect on India.

Dhoni battled very hard to score his slowest half-century in ODI cricket, off 108 balls. Of late, the Indian stumper has markedly changed his approach to batting. He tends to take the game very close and then unleash those big shots towards the end of the innings but he took it too close this time or he had faith in India’s lower middle order. Hardik Pandya, for a brief while, did look like helping Dhoni to finish the game off but lost his wicket at the wrong time. India required 31 from 29 when Pandya was making an exit from the ground.

In walked Jadeja at No. 8, a man who boasts of three triple centuries in first class cricket. Like Pandya, Jadeja too was quick to get off the blocks. India collected run-a-ball for the next two overs to leave 19 to get from the last 3 overs. After picking singles off consecutive balls, Jadeja wanted to finish things in a hurry. With 17 to win from 16, Jadeja tried muscling a length ball from Holder over long-on but found the safe hands of Powell at least 10 yards inside the boundary. The slowness of the wicket did not allow Jadeja to time the ball at all as the bat turned in his hand, reflecting that he was into the short early.

That wasn’t the smartest of shots Jadeja would have played in his international career which is 8 years old now. The equation was very straightforward and instead of slogging it out, it would have been prudent to look for singles to bring it closer. Post his dismissal, India lost the last three wickets for just 5 runs as the pressure ultimately got to Dhoni, a man who is known to have nerves of steel.

All-rounder Jadeja must take more responsibility in such situations. Dhoni was banking on him to be there at the end but his rush of blood changed the complexion of the game. In the end, it was an embarrassing loss for India (11 runs) and Dhoni didn’t look too pretty with his stern 114-ball 54. But things could have been different if Jadeja had stuck around.
