South Africa lost the first ODI against Sri Lanka, but made an incredible comeback in the second game on Saturday. In the absence of Temba Bavuma due to a finger injury, Keshav Maharaj led the Proteas from the front and guided them to a thumping 67-run victory by DLS Method.

Janneman Malan steps up

After winning the toss, the visitors put up a score of 283 on the board in 47 overs. Janneman Malan made a sparkling 135-balll 121 with the help of nine fours and one six. It was his 96-run partnership with Reeza Hendricks that set the platform South Africa for the rest of their innings.

Hendricks, who replaced Bavuma in the eleven, made 54 runs with five fours. In the end, Heinrich Klaasen’s quickfire 27-ball 43 lifted the Proteas to a comfortable score. For Lanka, Dushmantha Chameera and Chamika Karunaratne were the most successful as they picked up two scalps each.

Shamsi make hay in Colombo

Due to rain, the Lankans were set a revised target of 265 from 41 overs. With the required rate around 6.50, the hosts crumbled. Avishka Fernando, who scored a century in the first game, couldn’t reach the double figures this time. In 5.1 overs, the home team was reduced to 19 for three.

Charith Asalanka tried hard as he scored a 69-ball 77, but hie knock went in vain. Skipper Dasun Shanaka and Karunaratne scored in their 30s, but couldn’t carry on. For the Proteas, Tabraiz Shamsi was the standout performer as he picked up a five-wicket haul, though he conceded runs at 6.39.

My job was made easier by the team: Keshav Maharaj

After Sri Lanka’s defeat, Shanaka talked about his team working on death bowling. He also had words of praises for Malan and Hendricks. Maharaj, on the other hand, was delighted after South Africa completed the comprehensive win at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

“We started really well. The partnership between Janneman and Reeza took the game away from us. Death bowling also has been a cause of concern for us. The total was a chaseable one. The rain interruption also cost us a bit. We have to give more chances to fast bowlers. Last few series, the fast bowlers have been outstanding barring this series,” Shanaka said.

“My job was made easier by the team. We bowled well up first and pushed the Lankans on the back foot. I think the boys put in more energy behind the ball today. We talked about it. You should also play to the conditions. The coaches backed us and it paid dividends. We didn’t have much of a practice after the last game,” Maharaj was quoted as saying.
