After struggling for the most part of this home summer, South Africa have finally managed to win a series. They won the first game convincingly as they defended 291 with ease in the end. However, they were chasing 272 on a slightly tricky two-paced surface but the South African batting line-up stood up and delivered. They’ve now taken an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the series. Moreover, this is Australia’s second successive ODI series loss in 2020.
Aaron Finch, D’Arcy Short help Australia recover as Lungi Ngidi takes best figures
Earlier, after opting to bat first, Australia were off to a flying start. David Warner took off as skipper Aaron Finch played second fiddle as they raced away to 50/0 in six overs. The left-handed opener scored a quickfire 35 before Lungi Ngidi struck and sent back the hard-hitting Aussie batsman. Steve Smith didn’t last too long as he was out for 13 while Marnus Labuschagne got a first-baller.
But it was Finch and Short who got together and bailed Australia out of a tricky situation (81/3). The duo shared a 77-run stand for the fourth wicket but it was Anrich Nortje who got the better of Finch. Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey played a couple of handy cameos. But the innings fell off the cliff towards the end as the Aussies could score just 14 runs from the last 20 balls.
It was Ngidi who was doing the bulk of the damage. The 23-year-old fast bowler picked up 6/58 and bowled really well throughout. He first derailed Australia’s top order before coming back to pick regular wickets at the death to help South Africa restrict the visitors to 271.
Mitchell Starc knocks over Quinton de Kock, again
Quinton de Kock has been batting really well and has been South Africa’s best batsman across formats. However, he’s had a tough time countering Mitchell Starc. The South African skipper was knocked over twice in the T20I series in a similar manner. Starc went through de Kock’s defence once again but this time it was on the inside edge. It was an early breakthrough for Australia but they couldn’t capitalize.
Janneman Malan ton sets up South Africa’s win
After South Africa lost de Kock in the first over, Janneman Malan joined hands with JJ Smuts to resurrect the innings and the duo added 91 runs for the second wicket. Kyle Verreynne was dismissed early as well. But the likes of Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller complemented Malan really well as the latter went on to score a maiden ODI ton.
It was just his second ODI and was out for a golden duck on debut. Malan made an unbeaten 129 which included seven fours and four sixes as he took the Proteas home with nine balls to spare.
Here’s how Twitter reacted:
Ngidi dismisses Warner, Smith and Labuschagne in just the first half of his spell😵😵😵🔥🔥🔥.
What an asset for 🇿🇦!
With Nortje's pace and Rabada already the main man, SA bowling looks fierce.@CricCrazyJohns @IManish311 @cricrohit @absy #SAvsAUS #proteas #Ngidi— Amey Singh (@Amazing1999ask) March 4, 2020
Maiden ODI hundred for Janneman Malan, he went for a golden duck in the first ODI but returned with a bang by scoring a top hundred against a quality Australian attack while a chasing 272 runs. #SAvAUS

The man's numbers don't lie
He tops best strike rate by a bowler across all formats, this year.
What a year he's having

It's official! Mitchell Starc removed from Bumrah academy. #SAvAUS

Must also mention how much Shamsi has improved as a bowler. Landing it consistently and forcing batsmen into risky shots. Great economy rate even when he’s not necessarily taking wickets

So good to finally see batters stepping up in big moments. One man team? Clearly not. David Miller celebrated Malan's century like it was his own. The whole balcony did. Encouraging signs #Proteas #SAvsAUS

End the JJ Smuts experiment

Both Ngidi (6/58) and Malan (129*) awarded player of the match. 👏🇿🇦. Youngsters taking over…. #SAvAUS

Welcome to the Boucher-Qdk ERA.
They were close to England in both the formats still continued the same brand and giving the opportunity to youngsters & finally won the series against one of the WC semifinalists in 2019.

First series win of the summer
This is a star studded Australian team. Our young team can be very proud of themselves. Well done lads. So many positives regarding the youngsters notably individual performances from Janneman and Kyle
— Bilal 🇿🇦 (@billz_25) March 4, 2020
There’s so much criticism about our domestic game but it continues to produce quality cricketers. The entire squad that beat Australia has come through our system over the last few years whether it be Franchise, Nat Academy or SA A. 2 young cricketers led from the front tonight.

When Ngidi is fully fit and firing at all cylinders he is a quality bowler. Has bowled beautifully today and fully deserves his career best figures of 6/58#SAvsAUS #Proteas #MangaungOval

FIVE WICKET HAUL FOR LUNGI NGIDI. 👏👏👏. Couple weeks ago people doubted him. Lol. Well bowled! #SAvAUS

South Africa always up their game when they play ODI vs Australia.
— Johns. (@CricCrazyJohns) March 4, 2020
23-year-old Lungi Ngidi with 6 wickets and 23-year-old Janneman Malan with unbeaten 129 runs lead the victory for South Africa.
That is good news for the future.

What an innings
— Jofra Archer (@JofraArcher) March 4, 2020
I would have tweeted "Well done Janneman" but it's hardly appropriate at this time of the hour. #SAvAUS
— Manya (@CSKian716) March 4, 2020
Time to bring Jhye Richardson to the eleven.
— Johns. (@CricCrazyJohns) March 4, 2020
One of the most stunning series scorelines in recent times, even accounting for the fact that Australia were at the wrong end of the deck in both the matches.
— Alagappan V (@IndianMourinho) March 4, 2020
Klaasen, Malaan are the stars of this series victory but let's not forget #DavidMiller.
– 64 (70) in 1st ODI
– 37* (29) in 2nd ODI
No batsman (No. 5-11 & minimum 500 runs) vs AUS has a higher average than Miller's 59.16. His strike-rate of 105.34 is the 3rd best too.#SAvAUS
