Twitter Reactions: Jason Roy takes Delhi over the line in another last-ball thriller
DD opened their account while MI have lost all their three matches.
Though both the teams had lost two games to start the season off Mumbai Indians looked favourites in this battle. Not just because they were playing at home but also since the team has never been a great starter. The match turned out to be a humdinger as MI posted 194 runs on the board and Delhi got over the line on the very last ball as Jason Roy hit one over the infield to register their first win. And after three Mumbai still remained wicket-less.
Despite the fact that Delhi Daredevils was the only team that lost a game chasing this season Gautam Gambhir decided to invite Mumbai to bat. They had an amazing start as Suryakumar Yadav and Evin Lewis started the proceedings. On a flat Wankhede wicket where the ball comes on to the bat, the bounce is true and one can hit across the line they had a treat for the fans early on.
The run rate was 14 after the first 6 overs of mandatory powerplay and they added 102 runs for the opening wicket in 9 overs. Lewis scored 48 while Yadav brought up his half century. He was playing on his home ground, Mumbai and made it count. Ishan Kishan’s knock ensured the team didn’t drop momentum despite losing the set batsmen in quick span.
However the lower order couldn’t make it count and they ended with an under-par looking 194/7 in 20 overs. For Delhi, Trent Boult, Daniel Christian and Rahul Tweatia picked a couple of wickets each.
DD openers also replicated a similar effort with Jason Roy playing a knock that bettered his Mumbai counterparts. Rishabh Pant showed a lot of maturity in his knock of 47. Though he scored the runs off just 25 balls there was less slogging and more sensible play.
Roy was there till the end and he found a partner in Shreyas Iyer. The duo backed their ability and in the end took the team home though it got really tight. Roy was unbeaten on 91 off 53 balls while Iyer scored 27.
