Day Two of the third Test match at the Wanderers witnessed a spectacular turnaround enforced by Team India after being 2-nil down in the series. Having been bundled for a total of 187 in the first innings, the Indian bowlers led by Jasprit Bumrah staged a fantastic fight back to restrict the Proteas to 194 runs.
Alongside Hashim Amla, two of their bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander displayed their prowess with the bat and contributed invaluable runs for the team. None of the other batsmen even managed to cross double figures. While Dean Elgar was dismissed early, Rabada and Amla put up a 64-run partnership for the third wicket this morning.
After irritating the Indian bowlers for a while, Rabada finally got out. Soon Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled AB de Villiers, his middle stump was knocked off the ground. Skipper Faf du Plessis shoulder armed a delivery trusting the bounce on the surface but he misread the ball and it hit the top of his stumps. The Proteas were then left reeling at 107/5.
Amla, at the other end, smashed his 27th Test fifty. He singlehandedly led South Africa’s cause in the second session as the rest of the batting lineup fell flat. Once he got out it was only a matter of time before the tail got cleared. Amidst, Philander’s 35 was crucial for the Proteas as it didn’t just clear up the deficit but got them a lead.
The South Africans were all out for a total of 194 runs, seven runs ahead of India. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick amongst the Indian bowlers as he got a five-wicket haul. Bhuvneshwar who was dropped in the last game got three wickets.
As India came out to bat, it was a surprise to watch Parthiv Patel walking out with Murali Vijay to initiate the innings. While he began steadily, his stay at the crease wasn’t long and he was dismissed courtesy a brilliant catch diving forward by Aiden Markram. There were no further casualties as India were 49/1 at stumps on day two with KL Rahul and Vijay at the crease.
There was appreciation for Hashim Amla on Twitter for his brilliance with the bat. Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were also lauded for bowling well. Mohammed Shami got trolled for his inconsistent lines. Parthiv’s day oscillated from doing well with the gloves to getting out cheaply again.
Here we present to you some of the most amazing Twitter reactions during the course of the day:
Something quite different about India's approach in their last batting effort in the Test series – a tactical switch in the batting order for starters, far more relaxed too.
Sometimes it takes a dead rubber to make you come alive.#SAvsInd

One aspect which nobody seems to be talking about in this series is the fact that the series has put a stamp over the fact that South African batting lineup is overrated. #SAvIND

Some of the best shots of this innings have been played by Rabada, Philander, Morkel and Phehlukwayo. Bowler-friendly wicket indeed.#SAvIND

Rabada would consider himself unlucky. Nicked it to the only guy in the slip cordon who can catch. #SAvInd

I really want @mvj888 and @ajinkyarahane88 to get some runs in this test. Both are very important batsmen in this test line up for away tours . #SAvIND

Parthiv had a decent match behind the stumps…and now, he's been sent to do his thing in front of the stumps too. Even if it doesn't work, I don't mind this move #SAvIND

Once again, the bowlers have kept India in the game. The batsmen have a final chance to redeem themselves on a really difficult wicket.
