The Supernovas lost their first match against the Trailblazers in the Women’s T20 Challenge 2019. However, the team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, made an incredible comeback and beat the Velocity by 12 runs at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. They also qualified for the final of the tournament. Meanwhile, the Smriti Mandhana-captained Trailblazers got knocked out on account of having the worst NRR.

Ravaging Rodrigues comes to the party

After losing the toss and being put in to bat first, the Supernovas managed only 142 in their 20 overs. Priya Punia and Chamari Athapaththu added 29 runs, after which Shikha Pandey got rid of Punia, who got a run-a-ball 16. Athapaththu smacked five fours to score 31 off 38 balls and she was stumped by Sushma Verma off Amelia Kerr. Thereafter, it was all about the 18-year-old Jemimah Rodrigues.

The prodigy manipulated the field and found the gaps without dropping much sweat. She accomplished her half-century off a mere 31 deliveries. She played until the very end and remained not out on 77 off 48 balls with 10 boundaries and a six. Sophie Devine didn’t get going and became Kerr’s second victim. Harmanpreet Kaur also strained to get bat to ball in the dying stages of the innings.

Wyatt, Raj and Veda play decently

Velocity didn’t have a great start as Radha Yadav rattled 15-year-old Shefali Verma’s woodwork. Hayley Matthews found the boundary twice, but Anuja Patil pinned her plumb in front for 11. Then the experienced duo of Mithali Raj and Danielle Wyatt put their heads down and cobbled together a stand of 56 runs off 48 balls. Poonam Yadav delivered a body blow, getting rid of the ominous-looking Wyatt.

Wyatt scored 43 off 33 with four fours and two sixes. The onus was on Mithali and Veda Krishnamurthy to shepherd their team. For qualifying, Velocity had to either win or lose the contest by 25 runs or less. Both Mithali and Krishnamurthy tried to ensure that first and they did it in the 19th over, though the Velocity lost the match. Even as the skipper stayed unbeaten on 40 off 42, Krishnamurthy got 30 off 29 balls.
